From Sailing to Selling


Crusty Old Me.

It wasn't until I was forty-six that I got into sailing. In a used Bristol 29. The first summer, I did Barnegat Bay or sailed thru the Point Pleasant Canal, down the Manasquan River, and out into the Atlantic Ocean, going as far as Atlantic City, sixty miles away. The second summer, I did Chesapeake Bay and circumnavigated the DelMar peninsula. Third summer, I circumnavigated Long Island and visited islands clear up to Martha's Vineyard. The windvane with auxilliary rudder was working, now that I had reengineered it. The fourth summer, I singlehanded to Bermuda. Three times! My daring achievement is inscribed on the Adventurer's Cup of the New Jersey Bristol Sailing Club. Then, five wonderful years doing the islands of the Carribean. 

Upon returning to Southern California, I purchased a repo Westsail 32. It was great fun sailing to Avalon on Catalina Island and to other Channel Islands. In 1998 I sold Kitka to Warner Bros. for filming the action scenes in The Perfect Storm movie. In 1997, I bought Insouciance, a Corbin 39 pilothouse cutter. But now I am seventy-nine years old. My sailing days are about over. So I have these items to sell, because I never got around to installing them. My loss is your gain.
