The Farm
Hi, I'm Jane Augenstein a primitive rug hooker and pattern designer from southeastern Ohio. I use both new and recycled wool in my rugs, and dye wools to achieve muted colors that give the appearance of antique rugs. Although the antique rugs (when newly hooked) were vibrant in color, I strive for a subtle color tone; it gives my work a softer look. I cut the wool into strips by hand or with a cutter for a wider and uneven style of strip.
My loops are not perfectly even and not always the same width. I believe this gives my rugs more of an antique feel and the look of 19th century rugs, which I love. My patterns are inspired by and some are adapted from old primitive rugs. Most ideas come from my surroundings and memories from the past.
My husband and I live on a wonderful 40 acre farm with our five dogs; Lucy, Gonzo, Laverne, Buster and our newest member of the family Petey; Kitty our cat; and Gilly, my rescue colt. He came to live with us April 2004. We now have a new addition to the farm, Pokey the painted donkey! Gilly has a buddy to play with.
