After 9 years of selling on eBay, maybe its
about time I introduce myself. My name is Michael.
Ever wonder about the name lobman1? Before I started
selling watch and clock related items, I was a lobster
fisherman. Lobster fishing is a tough job as reflected in
the high cost of lobsters.
When I first learned of eBay, I tried my
hand at listing everything from antiques, to candles and
yes, even LIVE LOBSTERS! Long before eBay came up
with their "Trading Assistant" feature I was taking on
consignors. But, most consignors had no idea how eBay
functions. Most wanted impossibly high starting bids.
Well, they soon learned it just doesn't work that
way.
During this period I was searching for a
niche. Something I could sell on my own on eBay. Then
my wife's grand uncle, Walter, who had been a
watchmaker, fell ill and had to go into a nursing home.
For awhile he was able to help me with descriptions, but
it was not long before he passed away. The family asked
me to help liquidate his estate and to keep with Uncle
Walter's wish that all the proceeds from the watch
material go to his Great grandnephew. His Great
grandnephew is my 6 year old boy. At the time he was
only a year old.
As I continued selling more and more of his
watch material, I socked away a nice sum of money for
my son's college education. Then, after a couple years of
selling on my own, I hooked up with a long time
watchmaker and started selling his items as well. Uncle
Walter did not have enough time to teach me very much
about horology and this new watchmaker was able to
help with descriptions and resources. It was a mutually
beneficial association and we became great friends. But,
selling his items was on a percentage basis and I was
working a ton of hours between lobstering and eBaying.
I was fast coming to the point where I had to decide. Did
I want to continue lobstering, with all the work, hours
and dangers or should I "cut bait" and go full time
eBaying. Well, realizing I wasn't getting any younger the
decision was made. Exit lobman and enter lobman1
!
Now, with the advice of a watchmaker, I
started buying horological material and soon found
myself travelling the country, buying watch and clock
collections as well as tools, books and any other
horological items that became available.
