I buy Cameo or Prooflike modern coins. For foreign coins, I buy ms62+ coins with interesting designs or stories to talk about before 1 of 2 local coin clubs. I am an over 25 years ANA member. For certified coins. I look for NUMBERED Teletrade acceptable coins. PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or ICG. All other Certified coins have POOR RESALE VALUE! NEVER PAY EXTRA FOR WORTHLESS IRRELEVANT COIN FEATURES! (Such as First ANYTHING,Past owners,Signatures or other JUNK NOT ABOUT THE COIN!)
I used to certify, but I LOST TOO MUCH. Let others LOSE MONEY! My past losses make me check on the original owners cost. I compare market prices on recent past certified coins & populations for my bids. MY OPINION IS AS BIASED AS ANY OTHER OWNER! Use certification services to help protect yourself.
If you pay for Professionals to certify a coin you want, THE CERTIFICATION PAPERS SHOULD BE EXACTLY AS YOU WERE PAYING FOR!
If you WANT CAMEO, DCAM OR PROOFLIKE, THE GROUP OF PROFESSIONALS PAPERS YOU USE MUST PUT IT ON THEIR LABEL! I usually LOST money on attempts to UPGRADE! If the SELLER is SURE IT CAN UPGRADE, make NO DEAL until AFTER THEY HAVE THE UPGRADED PAPERS FIRST!
REVIEW a SELLERS SCAN FIRST!
ASSUME a LIE, & be Happy if the coin is as ADVERTISED!
MANY TIMES, I HAVE & WILL CONTINUE TO RETURN MISREPRESENTED COINS!
Do NOT LET SELLERS MAKE YOU LOSE MONEY WHEN YOU RESELL THAT COIN! IMMEDIATELY Return MISREPRESENTED EBAY ITEMS!
The 2 EXCEPTIONS I have used on my Certified PL required rule are:
I. 1. A NGC coin is claimed to be a prooflike or cameo. The scan of this coin LOOKS GREAT! 2. That coin it is NOT certified as cameo or PL. 3. BU coins are too Rare to have a listed value in 2003 Krause! 4. The certifier and ALL the other NUMBERED TELETRADE RESPECTED certifiers show a coin made of this metal has NO cameos or prooflikes.

II. 1. A PCGS coin looks Great & PL. 2. PCGS fails to acknowledge the coin is PL. 3. The coin is OFFERED for LESS than it costs for PCGS to certify! 4. 2003 Krause does NOT list a BU value since the coin is too RARE! (PCGS ms68 1976 Bulgaria 2 Leva Commerative)
I think most normal coins are a poor investment. I disagree with current market coin values. I want Certified coins with FLASH! that STAND OUT IN A CROWD! I think LONG TERM. For Proofs, I want CERTIFIED CAMEOS IF AVAILABLE at Reasonable prices. For Circulation type coins, I prefer RARER CHEAPER NGC or ANACS PL's, or ICG Dcam's over higher grade Regular coins of the SAME DATE & mintmark! I look for completing several impossible dream PL sets! (P&D ms67+ PL state quarters, some ms66+ Canada Cameo PL coins.)
I disrespect many PCGS coins until PCGS follows more of NGC's BETTER grading standards. Ex: Canadian Cameo PL's, USA & Foreign PL coins. PCGS or ICG Satin finish coins are COMMON compared to tougher NGC or ANACS PL's!
I am VERY PRICE COMPETITIVE! I do not have to have ANY specific coin today! A coin I buy MUST FIT into one of my MANY interests. I check on PCGS populations through Heritage Coins.
NGC stopped free populations. I hold that against NGC coin purchases.
There are 2 important things to check:
1. What is that coins population in that grade or ones near that grade? 2. What % of submitted coins made that GRADE? 1 out of 5 is poor compared to 1 out of 40 or more!
I love to buy interesting bargains on RARE Flashy numbered Teletrade acceptable, Common in their standard issue, coins few people want!
