MagicFire Beads

About My Beads--The Process
I have been lampworking (in other words, making beads out of glass) for over 3 years now. I use a Lynx torch, oxygen and propane to melt the glass in my basement studio, and wrap the glass around wire mandrels to make the beads. After the beads are formed and decorated, I put them directly into a digitally-controlled kiln and anneal them at 960 degrees for at least an hour to remove stress from the glass. I then let them cool gradually overnight. The annealing process makes the beads extremely durable, and they should last hundreds or thousands of years.

About Me
I am married, a mother of 2 school-age children, and currently a K-6 Librarian in two elementary schools in St. Louis. During the summer I make beads and play with glass.

I have been creating art of one sort or another ever since I can remember. I still enjoy quilting and machine embroidery, but once I discovered lampworking I haven't had much time for anything else! There is something about melting glass that is extremely satisfying and addicting.

I also enjoy mixing colors and experimenting with different color combinations. I was given the name "MagicFire" in a dream (way before I discovered lampworking), but it really fits; when I am playing with glass sometimes the results seem like magic! There is something very special about creating these tiny treasures.

I used to think glass was "just glass", but I have learned better. Glass seems alive to me now; even when it seems frozen and solid, it is still in a state of flux on a microscopic level. And when artists create objects out of glass, I believe we put a little piece of ourselves in there too. Now, that's something to think about!
