| Anti-Virus Software |
|
1. Make sure your anti-virus software (AVS) has the latest updates and run
a full virus scan on your computer. If you don't have an updated AVS, run
a free online scan at Trend Micro or Symantec.

| Anti-Spyware and Anti-Keylogger Software |
| Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1. Download the free version of Ad-Aware Anniversity Edition 8.0 from Lavasoft. 2. The installation program will automatically remove any prior versions of Ad-Aware and also search for any updates. Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6.2 It's always best to run two anti-spyware programs since they complement each other. 1. Download the free software from either download.com or Spybot Search & Destory and not from anywhere else since there is an impostor program on the Web that actually downloads spyware. 2. Launch the program but before you run it, click on the "Search for Updates" link. |
| Identity Theft |
| If
you clicked on a link and provided sensitive financial information, you
are now a victim of identity theft. First, change your eBay and PayPal passwords
immediately (don't forget that you have to change your eBay password in
PayPal also). Next go to the Federal Trade Commission Website immediately
and follow all of the instructions. Federal Trade Commission U. S. Department of Justice American Bankers Association Instructions from the United States Department of Justice "Special Report on Phishing:" 1. If you have disclosed your personal information to a possible phishing email or Website, file an online complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (a joint project of the FBI and National White Collar Crime Center). 2. If you have received a possible phishing e-mail, but have not yet responded to it, do not respond. Instead, send copies of the e-mail to the Federal Trade Commission at uce@ftc.gov and the Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@antiphishing.org. |
| Email Protection |
| Maximize
your email security by making the following changes to your options for
Outlook Express. There are similar options for other email programs. 1. Go to View >> Layout >> and under "Preview Pane" UNCHECK "show preview pane" 2. Go to Tools >> Options >> Read >> and under "Reading Messages" • UNCHECK "automatically download message when viewing in the Preview Pane" • CHECK "read all messages in plain text" Your email won't appear pretty but safety is the issue here since trojans and other nasties can be embedded in XML by just opening an email and not clicking on an attachment. 3. Go to Tools >> Options >> Security and under "Virus Protection" • CHECK "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" By checking this option, you cannot open an attachment. If you received an email with an attachment that you are expecting and are 100% confident about its origin and authenticity, then close the email, go into the options as instructed above and UNCHECK the option. Open the email again, SAVE the attachment (don't click the attachment to open). Don't forget to go back to the options and again CHECK the "do not allow attachments ...." As an additional precaution, run a virus scan on the file you just saved BEFORE you open it. |
| Firewall |
| If
you don't have a router, then install a firewall. 1. Go to Zone Labs and download their free software, Zone Alarm. 2. Always keep Zone Alarm running when online if you have dialup and never turn it off if you have a cable or DSL connection. |
