The 2nd picture here is of our "Reptile Angels of 2009".
There are many heart wrenching rescue stories each year but these 2, John & Christina, get the award this year. Find a listing with # 53 at the end it has their story.
Many that purchase our items are yourselves rescuers and it's a privilege to meet so many other kindred spirits from around the world. It's wonderful to know so many are out there but at the same time a disappointment to know there's such a great need.
On a personal note, many of you have shared your stories and moved me to tears as to why you wanted a certain animal because of the totem it represented to you, a friend, a loved one or to someone that has passed. I treasure each and every story.
Especially enjoy pictures you send of your pets and how many of you consider yourselves on your pets "staff", from the pets point of view of course. Now that's true love.
Every kind of animal from Sophie the Pigeon to George the Iguana are pampered to say the least.
Don't let on as the animal rights enthusiasts will make you put them back in the wild where your poor pampered, spoiled rotten, dotted on, clearly hates being in captivity, pet will have to fend for itself !!!
Since I have you as an "captive audience" I'm going to editorialize here for a moment or two. Present some animal perspectives you didn't know about or maybe hadn't considered of before.
All animals are special to God and Mother Nature or they wouldn't be here. We were given the responsibility and honor of caretakers of this planet and we have no right to alter their magnificent living tapestry.
I want to state, I'm not one of the radical animal rights enthusiasts that don't believe in animals in captivity or as pets. It's clear they've never experienced the special bond and mutual companionship pets provide.
I'm just one person that loves wildlife...a bit more if it's "coldblooded" and kinda dinosaur-like.
Wildlife should not be "chosen" to be saved because it's "cute and cuddly", has "commercial value" or "looks good" on TV with a celebrity holding or standing by it. Have you ever seen a celebrity talking about the "seriously" endangered rattlesnakes or Chinese Alligators...no. However, you have seen them talking about how important it is to save the sea turtles, why, because who doesn't love a "cute" turtle.
The only Endangered Species farmed under the guise of "saving them from extinction" are reptiles. Would you feel the same if they farmed snow leopards or baby seals for their fur under the same guise of "saving them from extinction". Most likely not, as a matter of fact you'd probably be outraged, and rightly so.
Few people know or care that the expensive, trendy crocodile or snake skin purse, briefcase, shoes, wallet, jacket etc they wear is an Endangered Species.
Too bad more don't see there's something morally wrong with that picture.
If one of you, after reading this, doesn't mow over a garter snake with the lawnmower, kill a rattlesnake when "getting back to nature" out in the woods, shoot lizards for sport or hunt crocodilians for their hides... that makes you a "real" animal person. Not a fake passing themselves off under the guise of "animal rights".
May all animals, especially reptiles, always have a safe and warm place to sleep, full tummies and most important...a loving "appropriate" home.
If you have a reptile and have questions or are just interested in reptiles please feel free to drop us a note and we'll get back to you.
Please remember if your thinking about getting a pet, first consider a "No Kill" shelter or rescue. This way you become part of the solution and not continuing the problem.
Every "pet" gotten from a NO KILL shelter or rescue keeps unscrupulous sellers from breeding animals just for money.
About Internet animal rescues and sales.
Frequently checking out craigslist and similar Internet sites all the time and the amount of outright lying and fraud perpetrated on innocent animals and sincere people just breaks my heart.
We get many inquiries for help from people that bought or adopted animals over the Internet.
If you adopt or purchase an animal from anywhere and they tell you it's been spayed and has it's shots...ask for the vet receipt...if they don't have it...the name of the vet...and if they can't remember...it's NOT spayed or has it's shots!!!
If that animal the seller is trying to re-home is so great and wonderful and friendly, good with kids and the elderly, as the listing says...then their wanting to "re-home" it why!
Many people get taken because they purchased from a place that the listing says something to the effect, "the picture posted isn't of the animal for sale but one like it".
That should be your only "red flag" and move on.
To make the purchase a binding, legal contract, ask them to take a good, identifiable picture of the animal for sale. In that email, with the picture, it has to say "this is the animal you'll be purchasing".
You'll be amazed how many have high priced animals for sale but their camera "broke" and they just haven't gotten around to getting a new one!!! Be smart, tell them you'll wait for the new camera.
