C. Peterson : On bringing my art to market:
Being an artist is both a blessing and a curse. When
you're creative it flourishes like a blooming field of wild flowers... but when
you're empty of creativity it can lag on like a famine to the imagination.
Deciding to share it with the world is a big step, you
subject yourself to all forms of criticism, good, bountiful, bad or ugly.
Inevitably it must be done.
I've been haphazardly selling my art for years, but never
overly serious. I've always put making a living first and kept my art for
myself,
however, by the good fortune of having faith in God and faith in myself, I have
more time to devote to my inner passion of painting
and sculpting.
Art itself is my passion, I breath it, study it, I never
tire of looking at all forms of art. Each year I study a handful of masters,
absorbing
their work, dissecting their style, and incorporating aspects into my own style.
Style, is an issue for any artist. I've been painting
since 1994 in oils and I still feel like I don't have an absolute style.
However, a strange
thing has occurred. And perhaps its best to give you a little background on my
painting habits.
When the eminent need to paint comes upon me, it lasts for
2-3 weeks, and I'll paint furiously during that time, but then its gone,
like a wind that just blew through my life. When my palette is getting sparse of
the colors I use the most, its time to load up the palette
again, and the paints that are left are a bit dried out, and seeping into each
other, I find myself at a cross roads, I just can't bring
myself to throw the remaining unused paint out. So with a stack of boards on one
side, paints and turpentine on the other, and usually
only a palette knife, I'll create a half dozen quick paintings, using only the
colors I have left, many thinned out with turpentine, with no
regard for fine technique. Despite all my study and practiced techniques, these
are some of my best work, and more often than not
what sells, furthermore, a style emerges.
This is how I feel about art, if you love it, you
should have it. If you can't afford the original, a print, if not a print, a
postcard.
If seeing it moves you and makes you feel something, it should be a part of your
daily bread.
Art is, in its essence, a tiny portion of another self.
What I mean, is that each work I create, whether its drawing, painting or
sculpture, it is in fact a tiny self-portrait of how I'm feeling, a reaction to
my own experiences, and you the viewer may be
drawn in or not touched at all. I've created art and sold art long enough to
know that it is a love-hate relationship.
A good example is Jackson Pollack. When I look at his
work, I feel his chaos, it almost screams at me visually, and yet when
I stand back, I often feel like he has created a puzzle in which he hides his
name in every painting, and all I see... in big letters is
his name... JACKSON, and the chaos disappears.
So with that being said. I bring you some of my work. If
it moves you. Make it part of you life. If you can't afford the original, I
offer most
of my work as signed prints, which I sell through my shop. Either way, I
appreciate you taking your time to look at my work, my passion.

These two paintings, I've kept for my own collection.
