Back Into Comic Books 30 Years Later
Hi! I was born in 1957 so I was 5-6 years old when all the original Marvel Super-Hero comics 1st came out (Fantastic Four, Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, X-Men, etc.). My brother and I also read alot of DC stuff (Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, etc.) but I always liked the Marvel super-heroes the best. I could always relate to Peter Parker as the Amazing Spider-Man. I think that's the main reason why he's still so popular today. Just your average Joe with a lot of personal problems to worry about.
Anyway, we had ALL of the original runs of Fantastic Four, Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, X-Men, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Tales of Supense, Tales to Astonish, ALL of them. I don't know how many times I've kicked myself in the butt for ever trashing/losing/trading/selling all of those wonderful comics which are now worth HUNDREDS and THOUSANDS of dollars each. I'm willing to bet there's a BUNCH of you out there who did the same thing. If nothing else it teaches all of us to TAKE CARE OF WHAT WE HAVE.
How I Got Back Into Comic Collecting
I first "discovered" eBay myself in December of 2001. I had heard a lot about it but had never really gone to the website before. That's when I discovered just how much the value of comic books had increased since I was a kid. Boy was I surprised! I bought the 1st comic of my current collection (now almost 20,000 strong) on eBay on January 7, 2002 (Amazing Spider-Man #365) for $1.79. Since then I've invested over $35,000 in comic books (mostly Marvels of course). I buy them online, at garage sales, auctions, flea markets or estate sales. Pretty much wherever I can find them at a good price. I'm now back to the point where I now have complete collections of Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Captain America, Fantastic Four (except 7 of them), Incredible Hulk (except 1 thru 6), Iron Man, Thor and X-Men (except for #1). I've invested a lot of cash (and a few too many credit card payments) in these comics but I'm loving every minute of it. The way the stock market has gone the last 3 years I figure I'm better off investing my money this way.
I've now sold over 3,000 comics in eBay. My original goal was to purchase a nice collection of comics, protect them well (all comics are bagged and boarded)and keep them for 15-20 years until I retire then make a nice profit off of them. That's still the plan for now.
