I registered with eBay as a buyer several years ago but proceeded with extreme caution and only bought a couple of items until this year, mostly using Buy It Now. Since I have no children my user name includes my oldest dog's name and his birthday; I have four pets (none are allowed near my items to be sold, I'm very careful with those!), two small dogs and two cats.
Originally I am from Florida but have also lived in four additional states: New York, Texas, California and currently North Carolina. When I moved in July 2006 from the big city environment of Southern California to a rural area of North Carolina to spend some time with my mother, who at the time was elderly and in poor health from a lung disease, I realized two things, in addition to my obvious culture shock: 1) her house was quite small and 2) she had too much stuff, some of it left from my grandmother, including a bunch of nice vintage hats neither of us knew what to do with.
One day I was flipping channels and happened across a PBS program that had Marcia Collier (author of "eBay for Dummies" and other books) teaching a roomful of people how to sell on eBay. This was something I had thought about doing for a long time but never knew how easy it was to get started! I listened closely and took notes; that was an hour and a half or so of television that literally changed my life, or at least the way I spent my days!
I registered as a seller that day and listed my first items. Then soon decided to really do it up right and create my own company, which I called EKlectic Accessories. My grandmother always called me by my first and middle name (she was southern, what can I say?) and my first name is Ellen, although I normally "go by" a variation of my middle name, "Kayt." So the first two letters of my company name are for that. The first of my grandmother's vintage hats sold on eBay the following week for $25 (thanks again, my first buyer!!) and I was hooked! This happened in late January 2006 and now I'm selling mostly ladies handbags, men's Hawaiian shirts and various other small items.
I try to sell and live by a few basic tenets that include honesty and respect for all people, treating others as I would like to be treated, fast shipping, responding quickly and well to all questions or complaints (only one so far, thank goodness!) and fair and reasonable shipping & handling policies. I agree with the founder of eBay that people are basically good and I try hard to curb my natural impatience while waiting to receive payments and items I've won. :~) If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me any time. I'm more than willing to "listen" and respond and I enjoy making new acquaintances and friends!
My longterm goal with eBay is to eventually become a Power Seller and who knows, hopefully be able to have eBay become my permanent full time job, one from which I won't be laid off or have my position "eliminated" as has happened to me with three regular jobs from about 2001-2005. My mother, sadly, died on March 24, 2007 and I miss her very much. I am hoping that having eBay to focus on will be like a sort of therapy for me. I am also now trying to make enough extra money to help pay some of the burial expenses not covered by her pre-arrangement and some of the bills. In the meantime I have pretty much a "karma" way of handling life...put some GOOD out there and it will come back to you! I believe if we treat people right it helps in life. Thanks for reading and viewing my page.
