The Artistic Endeavors of Michael Martin Art has always been an integral part of my life. As a young child, I can remember sitting on the unyielding wooden benches of a 200 year old church that we attended and being given the weekly bulletin to doodle on. That may have been the beginning of my interest in the arts. My desire to create and capture the world through art continued to grow during elementary and high school. Later, I decided to attend VCU and during my first year, Art Foundation, I made the decision to go through the Communication Arts and Design Department. I graduated, and soon decided to create my own line of limited edition prints. I have always believed that as an artist it is important to have some control over your direction artistically. I have come to believe that there is beauty all around us if we just take the time to appreciate it. How many evenings do we pass by trees being set aglow by the sun without even a glance, or miss the colorful patchwork of earth beneath our feet because we are too intent rushing to our next destination. Life is a journey and I feel it is important not to miss the little details that give the world around us its character and charm. I hope to create works that speak to people. Whether it is an image of the college that shaped ones life, or an image of a neglected barn that represents a simpler time, I hope my work captures a moment and resonates with each viewer. Art is after all an extension of the artist. It is a shared thought that often exceeds its creators life span. I do not feel confined to one particular subject matter or style, because the body of work speaks much louder than any one piece. In the end, I hope my works connects with the viewer and allows them to appreciate the simple things in life that are so often taken for granted.
