About Me Meet the Artist:  Sharon Bergstein Hello…Welcome to Momma B’s Nursery where I artistically re-create vinyl dolls to take on a life-like quality.   A little background about myself: I have four children, ages 19 to 24. My husband and I and our kids have made the Lehigh Valley in eastern Pennsylvania our home for 24 years. I was a licensed in-home day-care provider for may years until I retired last year and began working full time on my real passion; reborn dolls. My creative specialties are reborning and cartooning. In researching “collectibles” for our ebay store, I came across a listing, which had the most incredibly realistic doll that looked just like a newborn baby called a reborn. My curiosity being piqued, I decided to investigate further. I was instantly “hooked.” In just a few weeks my first reborn named Grace was ready to meet the world.  Since then I have made numerous babies and shipped them around the world, as far as Australia, France, Belgium, Japan, Spain, Norway and the UK. The success of my ebay nursery has encouraged me to continue to learn and experiment with a variety of techniques. I plan to continue to pursue this art form until I can no longer hold a paintbrush.     The definition of a reborn is a vinyl doll with a high degree of realism. Great pains are taken by the reborn artist to ensure the baby dolls look and feel as real as possible.  This process is labor intensive and includes many steps from start to finish.  The reborn artist begins by purchasing vinyl kits that include a variety of parts sculpted by artists and/or companies such as Secrist and Berenguer.  Once the kit is received there are a number of steps that are followed in order to make the doll as life like as possible.  The removal of all factory paint, sanding off of any sculpted hair, washing all the parts, and insuring that the parts are completely dry are the first steps taken. Now the artist’s magic begins. Using specialty heat-set paints, I begin to develop the skin tone, which includes veining, under toning, and blushing inside and outside of the doll. After each and every application of paint, the part must be baked to cure the paint.  This may require many layers to achieve the desired effect.  The truly creative part comes in when the intricate work needs to be done.  Mottling, stork bites, skin blemishes, highlighting, wrinkles, and other realistic touches are added which also include the hands and bottoms of the feet.  Once the painting process is complete and set, the most time consuming step takes place…micro-rooting the hair, eyelashes and/or eyebrows. This tedious process may take countless hours because it is done with a fine felting needle and only one or two hairs at a time are rooted. The hair is then glued internally. Final touches include adding magnets for the pacifier, opening up the nostrils; at which point we call the doll a “breather.” and/or adding the eyes.  The baby is finally assembled after it is weighted with fine glass beads and poly fill accordingly for the age and size desired. I strive for quality and excellence from start to finish. All one of my dolls are one-of-a-kind (OOAK), signed and numbered and are exclusively for collectors and not recommended as children’s toys.
