Artist's Bio
The artist was born in Louisville, KY on the 100th anniversary of the wreck of the Hesperus and the 50th anniversary of the first airplane flight at Kitty Hawk. The artist leaves it open to conjecture on how this has influenced her artistic and spiritual development. Alida started drawing at age 3. Her first attempts to describe her world were scribbles of her new baby sister who though invading her world turned out to be her greatest fan. She received a degree in Fine Art and Education from Western Kentucky University where her greatest discoveries were that not everyone was a Southern Baptist and it is ok to be eccentric if you are an artist. Later graduate work was in biomedical illustration at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH. The artists most frequent venues are miniature watercolors which nurture the sentimental and rural part of her psyche, miniatures for dollhouse collectors (miniature dried flower wreaths, topiaries and arrangements/miniature handpainted screens and Halloween items)and the Earthengourd series in which the artist creates ceremonial rattles, amulet boxes and Goddess figurines from gourds. This series nourishes her mystic tendencies. The artist's work has shown in galleries in Cleveland, OH, and Lexington, Berea and Louisville, KY. Freelance clients include the University of KY, RR Donnelley and Sons Publishing and the KY State Park System. She presently lives with her understanding husband, a precocious daughter and Merlin the wonder Beagle in the bucolic, if not very culturally diverse, south central KY town of Glasgow known for its proud Scottish heritage.
