June of 2001 our world changed forever when I found a lump in my 3 yr old grandson's tummy and soon was told that it was cancer. Cameron had a Wilms' tumor (which is a form of kidney cancer) and it was connected to BOTH of his kidneys. The main treatment for Wilms' is to remove the kidney it is attached to. Since they could not take out both kidneys they removed the tumor along with portions of both kidneys. It was really scary because the doctors were not sure if either kidney would function but thank God they did. He had several months of chemo and lost a lot of muscle mass. His shoulders would not stay in place because he had no muscles to hold them and his whole body ached.
Cameron finally finished chemo and we thought things would only get better but was soon told he had another spot in his right kidney. He started having
real bad headaches, dizzy spells and passing out and they didn't know what was wrong. It turns out Cameron's blood pressure was really high and he spent another week in the hospital and the next 2 months trying to regulate it. He is on a low sodium diet (NO PIZZA etc.). "Etc." means most of his favorite foods and even MILK has sodium in it. They still do not know what the spot is in his kidney but he seems to be improving. Cameron is 4 now, his hair has grown
in nice and thick, his color is much better and he has finally gained a pound in almost a year!
Cameron Age 4
I want to THANK every one especially the doll chat people for all of their prayers for my precious little angel.
Wilms' tumors are very rare with only about 450 cases a year diagnosed in the United States. Most are found before the age of 5. For everyone with small children -- PLEASE check their tummies! If caught early it is very treatable with a 90% cure rate.
November 2002 - Just when we thought Cameron was finally doing so good he suddenly started loosing weight and getting sick. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Insulin dependant diabetes! We were all in shock to think something else could happen to this precious little boy. His diet was hard enough just being on low sodium (because of his high blood pressure), but now with the diabetes it is really hard to find something he will eat. He has to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. Sometimes by the time he finishes it is time to start eating again. He takes medicine for his high blood pressure twice a day and we have to check it several times a day. He has 5 insulin shots a day plus at least 6 sticks from checking his blood sugar. Plus he also has allergies and he is on mega doses for that.
Cameron has his own web site and it is updated regularly. http://caringbridge.org/mo/cameron/
Sept. 2003 ~ Cameron wearing the handprint tie he designed for National Childhood Cancer Foundation when he was only 4 years old.
Cameron is our Super Hero! Here he is as The Incredible Hulk knocking out cancer at the Relay for Life last year, June 2003. Cameron opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and then sung - Grand Old Flag in front of hundreds of people. The next morning at closing he sung - "I Believe I Can Fly". There weren't many dry eyes.
