More Than Words



Welcome to More Than Words Bookstore!

More Than Words is a unique bookstore, gallery, cafe and community space located on 376 Moody Street in downtown Waltham, Massachusetts. It is a youth run enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, out of school, or who have mental health or substance abuse issues to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. More Than Words embodies our mission to employ and empower youth in state custody while becoming increasingly self-sustaining.

More Than Words employs young people to manage the bookstore, while continuing to grow the online book selling business and also offering opportunities for additional youth entrepreneurship. The used book store offers a vibrant atmosphere by also serving as an art gallery and safe, positive space for poetry and spoken word events. The store gallery displays youth-made artistic creations for sale, including clothing, paintings and gift items, which will provide additional entrepreneurial opportunities for a greater number of youth. A small lounge area offers comfortable couches and tables where customers of all ages may relax, read and find a welcoming meeting area.


More Than Words' Mission is:

More Than Words provides empowering leadership and supportive employment opportunities for youth who are in foster care, court-involved, homeless or out of school to prepare them for self-sufficiency as they transition to adulthood.

More Than Words' Goals are to:

1. Provide supportive employment training through a peer-led model focused on real-world business, communication and technology skills.

2. Create opportunities for youth to develop and apply leadership and entrepreneurship skills.

3. Support youth to develop career and college plans and provide placement services as they transition to adulthood.

4. Foster creative self-expression for marginalized youth.

5. Share best practices with other nonprofits aiming to provide employment and leadership training for youth.

More Than Words' Vision is:

All youth will have access to meaningful employment training and a supportive community in order to be stable, healthy, and happy as they transition to adulthood.
