I am now retired after working for the same company for 37 years. I grew up in a small town in Vermont and just recently moved to Cape Cod after my retirement. I live in a wonderful town with my husband who is also my best friend and we enjoy gardening, fishing, walking, and of course working on crafts. Him not as much although he is really good with wood working and I'm trying to get him to make another rocking horse like the one he just finished for our new grandson so I can sell it on EBAY. It was so very cute and of course, perfect as my husband is a strong type "A" person. But until a long list of projects gets completed, I expect the crafts on EBAY will be my own for now.
For years my mother, my Aunt and myself made crafty gifts for all occasions and I use to joke about how much fun it would be to have a craft/gift shop, but had no idea on how to begin. Well, one Christmas eve about 20 years ago, a driver that should not have been on the road, hit my car and caused me to have a very serious accident. I was out of work for over a year and in that time, I really got to enjoy working with my hands because that is about all that I could do with a broken back, leg, foot, etc. After a lot of theraphy and help from friends and family, I got back on my feet, and by then I had so many small crafts completed that I turned a room in my house into a small craft shop that I ran in the evenings and weekends after I went back to work full time. It became so popular with the neighbors that my mother and Aunt would come and open it up 2 days a week while I was at work. Eventually I ran out of room in my home and before you knew it, we were in a small mall and I was running the craft shop that I always wanted. Both my mother and aunt worked for me full time and I eventually hired a wonderful seamstress that was looking for a place to make and sell her wedding dresses. We complemented each other well. She made the wedding dresses and many of the people purchased items for the wedding from me. All 3 helped me run my business for several years. Over time, Debbie, the women that worked for me, got so popular that she had to move and opened a shop of her own. My mother had to retire to take care of my Dad and after a time, I wore my self out trying to run a business and work full time and I was not in a position to quit work so I gave up my craft shop. However, I continued to make quilts, braided rugs, wall hangings and many other gifts and sell these out of my home but in a very small scale. I found it just too difficult to carry large boxes of items that I made to craft shows and it is just about impossible to find any place (at least where I live) that wants to sell your items on consignment and not expect 40% in return so I was about ready to give everything up when my grandson said..."Nana Joan, your are so creative, why not try selling your items on EBAY". After thinking about this for several weeks, taking every on-line tutorial I could find, I decided to take him up on his idea and here I am. I'm learning every day and loving it and hope to sell much more in the future. Thus the name "Nana Joan's Creative Collectibles". It probably should be Nana Joans Creative Crafts, but I have a house full of nicknacks that I have collected over the years that I don't have room for anymore and my mother, 88 years old, goodness, the garage sale queen has enough for a business of her own and is just now starting to realize she needs to start getting rid of lots that she has. So I expect there will be "collectibles" on my Ebay site for some time to come and with the grace of God, good luck with my health, and the ability to continue to be able to see and work with my hands, I hope to be an Ebay seller well into the future.
