The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) is headquartered outside the nation's capital in Alexandria, Virginia and was established by Congress in 1984 through the Missing Children's Assistance Act. NCMEC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates under a Congressional mandate and works in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juveline Justice and Delinquency Prevention in coordinating the efforts of law enforcement, social service agencies, elected officials, judges, prosecutors, educators, and the public and private sectors to combat crimes against children.
NCMEC's mission is to help prevent child abduction and sexual exploitation; to help find missing children; and to assist victims of abduction and sexual exploitation, their families, and the professionals who serve them.
