New York Pinball - Pinball Done Right !!!

The BEST selection of pinball machines on Long Island!
|
New York Pinball is a home-based business consisting of one very hard working, talented and humble employee, Ron Barbagallo :-). Pinball has been my business and my hobby for over 30 years now. My specialty is performing extensive restorations on pinball machines to make them look and play as close to new as possible. I am constantly searching to find the most desirable and fun pinball machines in the best condition. I personally handle all of the buying, selling, restoring, service calls and deliveries. Feel free to call Ron with any questions (516) 735-5756

Did somebody say pinball?
|
“SHOPPED” has got to be one of most misused terms in the Pinball Machine business. Other variations are reconditioned & overhauled. The problem is not which word is used but rather the way it is used. One seller’s idea of “shopped” can mean the machine was wiped down with a rag while another’s can mean 40 plus hours were spent going through every little detail. Some sellers claim the machine has been “shopped” even if they only changed the rubbers rings and some light bulbs. In my opinion the ‘shopping’ of a pinball machine is only as good as the expertise of the person performing the work. Here are some conclusions and observations I would like to share from my 30+ years in the business:
- Just because someone states that the machine has been “shopped” doesn’t guarantee you that anything of real significance was done to the machine.
- Most people are not aware that there are batteries inside their machine that can leak over time and destroy the motherboard costing hundreds of dollars.
- Most people do not perform ‘preventative maintenance’ on their machines (see above).
- Many buyers are not aware that some manufacturers are better than others.
- Most people underestimate the sheer mechanical complexity of a pinball machine.
- Most people do not realize the state of neglect the machine was in when they got it.
When doing in-house service calls, I find myself reminding people that the machine that wound up in their basement was most likely operated for money for a long time before they got it. Most were neglected and abused and received very little TLC. The machine probably made the rounds in the game operators various locations, arcades, bowling alleys, bars etc. before they bought it. The problem here is that the machine is virtually worn out by the time they bought it and the game operator just wanted to get rid of it to make way for newer machines. He most likely did very little to make it work properly and just gave it a quick cleaning and off it goes.
The same goes for buying a pinball machine from a garage sale, tag sale, auctions, newspaper ads and even EBay. Some of the suspicious activity I have seen includes shill bidding, sellers making false claims (putting it mildly) and some even using pictures that are not even of the machine they are selling! The main point I am trying to emphasize is that buying a used pinball machine that was not restored by a reputable, seasoned professional can be a disaster waiting to happen. Hopefully my wisdom will help you avoid any of these situations so you can buy a machine that will give you years of pleasure instead of aggravation!
