My name is Sharon and I live in Massachusetts, but grew up on the island of Newfoundland, the fifth in a family of seven daughters. I learned to hook rugs about 12 years ago from my sister, Deanne Fitzpatrick, who is quite famous for her rugs in Nova Scotia and throughout Canada. She is also the author if the book "Hook Me A
Story". Anyway, she taught me everything I know about rug hooking and is really the only reason that I ever had the nerve to create my own designs and expect people to actually buy them. I'm now in my very early 50's and my children are 25 and 28 years old, moved out and pretty independent for the most part. My husband and I spend alot of time here in our cozy little family room. He's a computer buff (very knowledgeable when I need help, Thank God) and I'm a, dare I say folk artist. Before I had children I used to wonder what we ever talked about together for the 5 years we were married prior to parenthood. Having little ones so consumed us and the bulk of our time. We never had time for a hobby, but now we do. They don't consume us, but they have brought us a sense of fulfillment and contentment that everyone should have. We still have to work out in the real world every day, but having a hobby that one really likes brings an added joy to life. I recommend it for everyone.
I so love everything about this hobby and do it whenever I have spare time. The gathering of the wool, creating the pattern and choosing the colors is so fulfilling. I swear I'd be hooking rugs all the time even if they didn't sell. I've really been enjoying myself on ebay and have met some really great people and alot of rug hookers, too. We're not too plentiful a group, so it's always nice to meet people who share my love of this art. In 2005 I was featured in an article in Rug Hooking Magazine and my rugs are part of both private and public collections. Well, enough said, I guess.
