Landstrom's is known for it's beautiful tri-colored gold punctuated with grape leafs. Landstrom's is
THE leading name in Black Hills Gold Jewelry. Landstrom's is the only company today that can trace
it's roots back to the beginnings of Black Hills Gold. In July of 1874 gold was found in the Black Hills.
On that day a scout named Horatio Nelson Ross and his mule stood beside a rushing stream. Bending to get a drink of crystal clear Black Hills stream water, he focused his attention on a scattering of bright colors that had caught his eye. Those colors proved to be gold. It was that gold strike that touched off a stampede for riches which was unparalleled in history.
In 1876, a man named Lebeau brought his three color grape and leaf motif to the Black Hills, opening a shop
in Central City. It is quite likely that most of the early day artisans in the Black Hills were trained by Lebeau.
In the early 1900's, George M. Butler & R.S. Quimby operated retail jewelry stores with manufacturing shops.
During the same period, Clarence Thorpe ran a small shop in Lead. Butler/Quimby & Thorpe were the two main
Black Hills Gold manufacturers.
In 1919 Thorpe sold his shop to his brother Frank Thorpe & E.O. Lampinin an employee of Clarence.
Together they operated in the city of Lead as a partnership under the name of F.L. Thorpe Co., later moving the business to Deadwood. Lampinin later leaves Thorpe, buying the old original tools and equipment from the George M. Butler Shop, operating in Deadwood under the name of Black Hills Jewelry Manufacturing Co.
In 1944 Ivan Landstrom bought the business from Ed Lampinin and moved it to Rapid City where Lampinin
continued to train employees. Today the business continues to operate under the name Black Hills
Jewelry Manufacturing Co., manufacturers of Landstrom's Original Black Hills Gold Creations.
In 1995 Landstrom's purchased the FL. Thorpe Co. completing the circle and it's history.
Landstrom's is not made with robotics, but with many human hands, which is why each piece is so special.
Therefore colors and cuts may vary slightly, as each piece is unique.
Fun Folklore: Henri LeBeau, a French prospector and goldsmith, came out west to make his fortune.
His optimism faded when he became lost and was approaching starvation. One night Henri dreamed of
the lush vineyards of his French homeland. When he woke up, he heard running water from a stream.
Following the stream, Henri found grapes native to South Dakota. Henri LeBeau settled in the Black
Hills and crafted jewelry using three colors of gold with designs representing the grapes and
leaves that had saved his life.
