The Sheep Goddess
Nikki Lynn Carollo's Fine Lampwork Art

NLC Beads Site
Ever wanted to buy a piece of art that didn't look like it was made by a starving artist? Oh boy, do I have the answer for you! My beads are individually made by me for your buying and fondling pleasure. If one catches your eye, I recommend bidding often and high as even when I try, no two beads will look exactly alike - part of the charm of lampwork art. Typically I list sheep, frogs, lizards, and florals, as well as whatever else may be hidden in my glass that week. I also have a lovely website... But I'm not allowed to put a link. If you poke around the 'net, you'll come across it. ;)

I have a question about the beads - how do you do it?

Each bead is meticulously hand-crafted to my exacting standards. A mandrel is heated with bead release on it to wind the bead onto - the size of the mandrel determines the size of the bead hole. Glass rods about the diameter of a pencil are melted and shaped into whatever suits my fancy that day. I make beads out of Moretti, Lausha, Murano, or Vertrofond glass - pretty much whatever I can find. I use a Hot Head torch, and don't even tell me what you can and can't do on it - It will give my torch a complex. Everything is merrily kiln-annealed so that my fellow lampworkers do not stone me. I then sell them to the screaming eBay hordes so... I can buy more glass. And make more beads, and sell more beads to buy other people's beads. It's a vicious cycle, but it works for me.

Questions???

The Sheep Goddess? Isn't that just a little pretentious?
Had I named myself that? Yes, it would have been. However, a fine group of beady people honored me with that moniker, and I am proud to have it.

Seriously, what's up with all the frogs and lizards? I mean, if you're the Sheep Goddess, why the amphibians?
Good question. Woman cannot live on sheep alone... Plus, they're cute. Things evolve differently in my world. I started with frogs, which turned into lizards, which occassionally spawn snakes. Go figure.

What's the worst question anyone's asked you about beadmaking?
That's a tough call between the old reliable, "How did you paint those?" and the new competitors of, "When do you glue the frog on?" and "How did you get those dried flowers in there?"

Do you do special orders? Because there's this bead I really like, and...
I would rather stick my hand into the flame. Wow. I hate this question. Not because I don't like surprising and delighting people with special requests, but because I am just so darn bad at it. Seriously. I get too easily distracted while torching and finish up a whole session without making a special order bead from months ago. (You know who you are, and I'm sorry, again!) So at this point, I need to sadly answer that no, I do not take special orders. I will gladly take suggestions and compliments (complaints generally get deleted from my mailbox in a cruel and ruthless fashion) but I cannot guarantee any specific items.

No, really, how do you feel about shipping?
I have shipped 99% of my items first class without insurance, and had very few problems. The bonus with this technique is that I can slap stamps onto the envelope and leave it for my nice mail lady to pick up the next morning, and your bead is on it's way faster. I'm starting to think insurance and priority mail are nasty schemes invented by the post office.

If you have any burning questions you need answered, email me and I may even answer!

Assorted Disclaimers, Details, and Et Ceteras

Disclaimer first - my beads are made of glass, which is known to be a highly breakable object. Typically, if it breaks from being dropped, thrown, shot, extreme temperature change, struck with a blunt object, struck with a sharp object, mistreated, suicidal or otherwise broken, it will then be sharp. If one of my creations turns sharp while in your possession, it could very well injure you. Please use all appropriate care!

Details - I try to ship on Wednesdays of each week. Should you need your beads sooner, let me know and I will do everything possible to accomodate you. I have been doing this for 3 years, and have heard very few complaints.

Et Cetera - I'll get back to this as soon as I think of it...
Enough about the beads - What about the Nikki?

I am a 32 year old mother of three (a dog and 2 cats, and oh boy was there an uproar when I told them they were adopted) who needs to make and sell beads - kibble ain't cheap. I've been lampworking since January 2003, and it has been the most addictive delightful thing I have done yet in my life. I hope to keep growing and expanding my horizons as a hot glass artist, and I'd like you to come along on my journey.

Lampworking is my time to relax and enjoy. I sell my creations because I enjoy seeing and hearing the reactions from people, and to support the obsession. I buy glass to make beads to sell beads to buy either more glass or other people's beads. It all works well that way...
