"WHY WE'RE CALLED not2bright"
A History of Our Specialty Art Lighting in the SteamPunk Style!
About 40 years ago in Torrance, California, there was a then-little-known Swap Meet that plugged along each weekend at the Roadium Drive-In Theater. It was here that young Rick Dalton discovered his love for treasure hunting and a bargain. Residing in nearby Manhattan Beach (Southern California), Rick would haul his "prizes" home, carefully examining and tinkering with them. Never one to tolerate clutter, he stacked and organized things. He credits his dad, a professional photographer, with giving him a different way of looking at things, encouraging Rick to take things apart and figure out how to put them back together.
Fast forward 20 years to the early 80's... now living in the Central Valley of California, Rick was married and busy raising a growing family. With a decent job in local government, and tight finances, he still managed to save a few bucks each week to visit the local Swap Meet. Little trinkets became loving projects for his wife and kids. Stained glass boxes, figurines constructed from bits of scrap metal, a rejuvenated boudoir lamp; gifts for Mother's Day and birthdays. The tool shed out back became a storehouse for Rick's growing collection of unusual "finds".
As the years rolled by, Rick's collection of items grew from a small pile to a respectable stockpile. Things that others passed over at garage sales and swap meets -industrial junk- caught his eye, and found their way into his possession. And -always- everything was catalogued and filed in military-perfect fashion. Thousands of items...
Over time, Rick found he had a special passion for making lamps. His ability for precision and knack for creative fusion resulted in meticulous works of art. After his wife of 20 years passed away in 1993, he found it therapeutic to organize his new, larger workshop, and begin to seriously create. One of his early ideas was taking an old Oster Beehive blender and rewiring it as a lamp, later adding clear glass marbles to resemble ice. Then there was the 1940's tire balancer that shined up nicely and looked great with a leaf-accented shade. An ornate old hotel kitchen gas jet went vertical, sitting atop an industrial gear; nicely wired and illuminated beneath a custom bear shade. A 1950's brass circular sprinkler, with a satellite (refractive glass) center changes hues as the light shines through where water used to spray. An Iron Studio Light Lamp, Espresso Lamp, Clarinet Lamp with a Megaphone shade, a unicyle lamp with a photographer's umbrella shade... these were early experiments that eventually caught the eyes of discerning local artists. Eventually, a downtown storefront window became a display, and the regional newspaper ran a feature article on the front page of its local section.
In the late 1990's, the name "not2bright" was suggested as a joke for Rick's new website...but it stuck! He says the name keeps him humble. Today, Rick's Specialty Art Lighting has enjoyed a measure of notoriety. They have been featured in an art gallery in Sausalito, the lovely town on the north landing of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Two awards have been received for Best of Show and Honorable Mention in 3-D art. Homes and offices from Massachusetts to San Francisco are graced with Rick's offbeat, one-of-a-kind, conversation-stirring not2bright art lighting!
Rick is married now to me (Judi), and together we have seven children, seven grandchildren, and a Schnoodle named Olive. I am a work-at-home desktop publisher and manage our eBay store, not2bright LIQUIDATIONS ETCETERA. Most warm weekends, we hop in our "other car", a 1994 Ford Aerostar, to scour the area garage sales, looking for junk. We aren't like the "professionals" who jockey and elbow each other for the best finds at the crack of dawn, though. We prefer waking up about 7:30, drinking our coffee over morning Bible study, then leisurely heading out with a roll of Ritz crackers to share for breakfast (the rest of the week we eat oatmeal). Our favorite part of "garage sale-ing" is meeting people and finding something left over that the professionals didn't notice! And, of course, Rick is always on the hunt for some crazy thing that will become part of his latest Art Lighting. Our friends' favorite expression is, "Betcha Rick can make a lamp out of THAT!"
