PAINT SQUARED: Daily Paintings by Maine Artist, Elizabeth Fraser
|
|
I am a self taught artist from Hudson, Ohio, where I grew up as a faculty brat at a college preparatory school called Western Reserve Academy. Art has always been an important part of my life, and while I strayed from it during my higher education, my passion for creating artwork has come full circle. After studying Romance Languages at Mount Holyoke College and beginning a career in education, I was inspired by my artist brother, Michael, to try my first oil painting. At the end of 1994 I picked up a paint brush and did a painting of Mont Saint Victoire and that experience changed my life and I have never looked back.

A disciplined and spirited painter, I work full time as an artist in Portland where I have a studio on Munjoy Hill. Inspired by the simple actions of my everyday life, I paint the scenes that I cherish and the moments that impress me. My artwork shows movement and feeling through bright, bold, expressive strokes that create a mood on the canvas. Primarily an oil painter, I also enjoy wood block printing and pastels.
In January of 2006, I began my daily painting project "Paint Squared: 8 Days a Week" where I complete 1 square painting a day, and once a week I actually complete 2 for a total of 8 a week. Each Paint Squared painting is an oil on paper and measures 5x5 inches, and upon completion the paintings get posted to my art blog, www.PaintSquared.com, and placed in a 5 day online auction with bidding starting at $60. As of January 14th, 2008 I have completed 829 Paint Squared paintings, many of which are in collections across North America. My daily painting project has also received international attention in a New York Times article about daily painters in August of 2006, in the USA TOday Online Gift Guide of 2007 & local attention through articles in Port City Life--Summer 2006, & The Maine Switch-- Summer 2007.
Recent highlights include exhibitions at Casa Frela Gallery in NYC, NY, & a sibling show with my brother Michael at the Moos Gallery in Hudson, Ohio. I show my work in Portland at the Gallery at Casco Bay Frames & in my studio, Fraser Art Studio, located at 81 Congress Street. My studio is open for Portland's First Friday Artwalk & by appointment--I'd love to have you stop by sometime!
