Claim What is Yours! Examples of Unclaimed Property

Welcome to the Pennsylvania Treasury Department’s unclaimed property auction.
Each year, the Pennsylvania Treasury Department receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property from abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, checks that have not been cashed, certificates of deposit, life insurance policies, safe deposit boxes and other sources. We maintain custody of this unclaimed property, while working hard to return it to its rightful owners.
Property such as jewelry, coins, and other items is held in the Treasury vault until it is claimed. Unfortunately, there are cases when owners cannot be found and property is left unclaimed. In order to keep space in the vault for the thousands of incoming items each year, the Treasury Department holds an online auction for items that were not claimed. After items are auctioned, the money is placed in the state’s General Fund until it is claimed by the rightful owners. The Treasury Department is seeking the owners of over $1 billion in unclaimed property. In 2008, we returned over $86 million to nearly 58,000 owners.
