Thank you for taking the time to read a little bit more about me. My name is Amy Peacock. I am an artist which means that I paint, make jewelry, books, collage, dolls and much more!
Artist Profile and Statement
I have always had a passion for creating. When I was very young I used to draw pretend 'jewelry' catalogs and ask my family to 'buy' something. That budding creativity grew into a jewelry making business and has recently shifted to include my various other passions. I no longer make jewelry, but of course it will always have a place in my life.
I am a self-taught artist residing in Washington state. While I am always experimenting and exploring new ideas, my current body of work focuses primarily on the combination of bright colors and dark themes. I love to juxtapose these dark themes, such as depression, with vibrant color. The viewer is attracted from a distance by the intense color, but upon closer inspection, they see thought-provoking and disturbing images. Ultimately my work is about communication. What does the piece say to you? To me? How does the viewer and the artist connect and communicate through this piece?
Dark themes and imagery may not be to everyone's liking, but it is important to me to explore the obvious (and not so obvious) dualities of our lives and culture: the way we laugh when we are in pain, the way we are able watch the 5 o'clock news and then go bathe our babies, the way we say one thing and do another, the way we portray ourselves one way but harbor a secret self, the constant push and pull between 'us' and 'them'.
My inspiration comes from a wide variety of places, from the pale blue rusted siding on an industrial building to images from my latest dream or nightmare. The nature of my inspiration and the very nature of dreams leads me to use a variety of media in my work such as collage, paint, pencil, found objects, and fabric.
