About me:
Hello and thank you for your interest in my artwork. My name is Chris Bogert, and I'm a painter, woodblock printer, and shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) musician & maker. I recently returned from living in Kyoto, Japan where I studied painting and drawing as well as the shakuhachi flute with Kurahashi Yoshio sensei (one of the top players in the world). I'm a recent graduate of Evergreen State college in Washington State. I mainly studied watercolor painting, woodblock printing, and Chinese/Japanese art history.

About my work:
My paintings all have a general theme of quiet solitude (my favorite). Being in a place devoid of the hustle and bustle of human life, but not excluding humanity altogether. I try to show a timeless place; a place that seems as if it has always been, and will always continue to be. My current series is of places from Kyoto and the surrounding area. I love that city for its extreme new vs. old contrast; walking down a busy street with pachinko parlors and gas stations, cars rushing by..., then take a left and head down a small street to find a world unchanged for centuries. I also have a series of paintings from Washington state. The idea is the same, but slightly more focused on the natural world. Nature is Washington's timeless place

My shakuhachi training:
1 year self study
3 months minyou study with Larry Tyrrell sensei in Olympia, Wa.
6 months kinko honkyoku study with James Hunter sensei in Spokane, Wa.
3 months myoan honkyoku & sankyoku study with Yoshio Kurahashi in Kyoto, Japan.
2 independent learning contracts with Evergreen to study the history, playing styles, building techniques etc.. (6 months)
