In the artist's words:
Most people ask if there is anything I don't do in terms of talents.
I don't do windows. I don't do math.
I was, however, an English major at Suffolk University up until a few years ago and am currently working on my masters in secondary education. Now when I'm not teaching or doll-making, I work for the family business and put together web sites and in general keep myself so lined up with projects that I can be found in a casual state of panic most of the time. This is normal.
I've been drawing without any real formal training for the past eight years or so and dabbled briefly with polymer clay making masks, roses, and several other small items that I sold to local role-players. Two years ago I started scribing for the East Kingdom of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) which keeps me happily busy researching medieval painting techniques and styles. Doll-making was a completely new venture inspired by that age old phrase that has gotten me in more trouble over the years - "I can do that!"
My training in doll-making is very limited. I am mostly self-taught though I have taken some instruction from Jack Johnston in one of his amazing seminars and with the help of several books have learned this art almost entirely on my own. Every day brings new ideas and new learning experiances. I am a firm believer that if you want to do something enough, you will find the resources and where withal to accomplish your goals.
I prefer to work in Prosculpt clay, which cures in a home oven and has an amazingly realistic transparency like human skin. I also tend to make my dolls with soft bodies for extra posing possibilities. I prefer fine fabrics, real glass eyes, and genuine mohair following the maxim that you get what you pay for and the extra money in materials means a much finer end result in one of my dolls. My inspiration is drawn from everything - the people around me, music, movies, nature, old stories - anything can spark an idea.
When I'm not up to my elbows in tiny doll body parts, I can be found playing my harp, writing, joining my friends in the Camarilla (a live-action role play organization), feeding my Sims addiction or running around in medieval clothes at an SCA event.
Please feel free to look back at some of my past One-Of-A-Kind doll offerings below. Please note that nothing is for sale on the page below, it is simply a gallery link of previous work.
