| It's fascinating thinking about the oil that we have available to us, right here in the US. Even more fascinating is the millions of dollars that were needed to build a road to oil sources found in remote areas of Alaska. Can you imagine if your state had areas that were just not reachable? Roads that killed many of those trying to build them? After the discovery of oil in the desolate area of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in 1968, There was no way to transport the oil - with the discovery being many miles away from any existing roads. Involved oil companies decided to construct an elaborate pipeline system which would transport oil from Prudhoe Bay in the North Slope to the Port of Valdez, where it could be picked up by oil tankers for shipment to the lower 48 states. The project was to begin with the construction of a haul road to carry supplies and workers to the remote areas through which the pipeline would transport oil over miles of mountains, rivers and streams. The Trans-Alaska pipeline's engineers drew on all available 1970s technology to design a pipeline that would transport oil from the Arctic Circle to Prince William Sound. In the course of its journey, the oil would have to travel up & down 3 major mountain ranges. At the height of production, in the late 1980s, the Trans-Alaska pipeline was transporting two million barrels of oil a day. Follow the oil as it flows 800 miles from the North Slope to the year-round port of Valdez. |
