Believe it or not it’s already Pinewood Derby season once again. Time has a way of going by fast. At the Pinewood Derby Den we don’t have any control over how fast time goes, but we do have a hand in making Pinewood Derby cars go faster.  

Over the years we have seen a lot of “sellers’’ come and go, at this time there seems to be a record number of sellers, offering a wide variety of Pinewood Derby items. Many of them are just reselling someone else’s mast produced products, such as wheels and axles in many different configurations. Be selective and knowledgeable of the items, as many of them are not even “official’’ BSA items.  A lot of the knock off axles & modified wheels being offer can get a Scout (DQ) Disqualify. For instants coned hubs (the rounding of the inner hub) or lighten wheels (reduced inner tread), most Scout events do not allow them. It is important to know your local rules and know what the seller’s are offering.

Another note of caution is to be sure to know the proper ways to use and handle the items used in the construction of Pinewood Derby cars, (lead weights, graphite lube, paint and polishes). Lead is toxic and should not be handled especially by a child. In the event you buy a pre weighted body (or car) check if the weight is sealed inside the car’s body, not just poured in the bottom of the body exposed. It would not be safe for a child to handle and or display the car with exposed lead weights. All the pre weighted bodies offered at the Pinewood Derby Den have the weight sealed within the car’s body, and safety instructions are included. 

A lot of the sellers and (resellers) are not, nor have ever been Scouts. This is probably why some of them have no moral issues with selling completely built competitive derby cars. The purpose of the Pinewood Derby Event has nothing to do with buying a finished car off the internet. Last year I personally have had the honour to talk with the founder of the Pinewood Derby the late Mr. Don Murphy about the current state of the Pinewood Derby fifty years after his conception. He believed “The Pinewood Derby is still serving its original intent some fifty years later” (a testament to his concept and the value of the Scouting Program). He went on to say he thought “the internet “the information highway” had raised the bar, making the “secrets” to building a fast Pinewood Derby car available to more & more people”. He said “it is a shame about completely built “completive” cars being offered up for sale”…
