Games where you give direction and the dog has to wait will give you the leadership role.  This is what you want!  If you are the leader, your dog will behave by taking direction from you.  In other words, dinner time becomes the prize in a game.  A simple trick like having your dog sit first is enough and takes virtually no time or effort on your part but makes a world of difference in a dog's eyes.  Have them turn in a circle, lay down, bark, shake hands or whatever command you choose and then reward with dinner, a walk, throwing the ball, affection, a car ride; cuddling with you on the couch, sleeping on your bed;  whatever your dog really enjoys.  If you ONLY reward after your dog responds to a request, it will make a world of difference. 

Did you know you don't have to compete to take up some really fun activities with your dog?  These activities have blossomed and spread over the last 10 years or so.  New dog class facilities are multiplying and you can have fun learning agility, rally obedience, herding - with ducks, geese or sheep, tracking - which is like playing "hide and go seek", flyball for the fast and furious and many others "games".  Some are offered as  "clinics" and you only sign up for one session and others go for 6-8 sessions.  I encourage you to look into it.  I have been amazed at the diversity of people involved - all ages and abilities abound and at what a huge difference these classes can make in a dog.  Even once a week for an hour can change a dog and your relationship, not to mention the fun you'll have.
