Porscheman's Ebay Page

Who is this guy anyhoo??
Hi, I'm Bill sometimes known as Porscheman. The moniker comes from my two geriatric 944s that I have and my passion for excellence in all things.

Other things that you might care to know.
Being a PhD from MIT in EE, I'm a bit of a wirehead, but my passion these days is antiquarian Bibles and other antiquarian books and leaves. I am both a buyer and a seller on the antique books/manuscripts section of ebay and part of the regular "gang" there. I maintain a commercial site at A Leaf From The Book along those lines. I also do some bookbinding/restoration as a hobby. Please contact me if you need such services on anything I have sold or anything you have bought from another party. I interact with a group of local bookbinders in the Boston area and can farm it out if I am unable to perform the work. Also I recommend Harcourt Bindery for those who wish a "name" bindery to do their work. Sam Ellenport is an artist and a gentleman. As I watch the internet evolve the only thing I can liken it to is the explosion of information and loss of control of that information by the power structure that occured during the early 1500s. For better or worse, enjoy it. Its the ride of your life.

About My Auctions
I do several things that are not the norm on ebay with my auctions. I do these things to be both helpful to the bidders and to protect them against getting carried away these things are:
  • Early Auction Endings. When bidding gets beyond what I think is a fair price on an item that I have offered for sale, I have ended an auction early. Under those circumstances, I will almost always have a same or similar item to offer the other bidders in the auction. I do this to be fair. While I like to get a reasonable price, I do not feel it is fair for me to let things get out of hand and take advantage of folks. I hope you will be understanding.
  • Explicit Reserve Amounts. When I have a reserve auction, I always give my reserve amount in the posting. If I forget, please ask.
  • Offering Items To Lower Bidders If I have more than one of something I may offer items to the lower bidders after the auction at a fair price. When I do this, all buyers will pay the same amount. As the high bidder in any of my auctions you will not pay any more than anyone else. Ebay will always be paid on the high amount of the auction close.
  • Alibris Listings On Books I am Selling. When I am selling books, I attempt to locate listings within the Alibris and ABE systems and call them to folks attention. I do this for a couple of reasons. First, when you buy from me I wish you to get a good deal. If it is available someplace else for less, you shouldn't be paying me more. Secondly, since some of the books I offer are seldom seen, prices are not always obvious. When my reserve for a book may be a certain amount and that seems to be a lot, it will be seen to be a bargain against other copies available. If you see the exact same thing on Alibris or ABE, I may have begun to list some of my inventory there. Under those conditions, I will mention that fact in my ad when I state the Alibris or ABE pricing.
  • Herbert Numbers and D&M Numbers. D&M is shorthand for Darlow and Moule who published a catalog of Bibles in the 19th century. A.S. Herbert took the English portion of their catalog and expanded on it at a later point in time. Both represent a fairly comprehensive catalog of the editions of Bibles in existance, at least through the 1800s. The Herbert number is generally the nth publication of the Bible in English. Herbert 306 would thus be the 306th time that the Bible was so printed. As with all human efforts, these catalogs are not infallable. Some Bibles are not listed, some Bibles are made from several editions bound together, etc. In essence though, it gives a reference so that we can all be talking about the same book.

Sales Policies (aka Terms and Conditions)
Since I both buy and sell on ebay I have been on both ends of the stick. As a seller, I wish for those folks who buy from me to feel that they have been fairly treated. On electronics, I generally offer a full warranty on anything that I sell that is new and a warranty against doa on anything that I sell that is used. Unless I specifically state otherwise, you may return anything that you buy from me in its origional condition for a complete refund of your sales price within 10 days of receipt. All my Bibles, Bible leaves, etc. are sold on an "on approval" basis. All items are guaranteed to be genuine and have been obtained from reputable sources. I enclude a certificate of authenticity on all leaves I sell. I accept payment by anything including credit cards (up to the limit of paypal or billpoint) and will work with international buyers providing payment is made by bank check in US dollars. Its very simple really, I will act to the buyer the way I wish the seller to act toward me when I buy.

About Feedback
I attempt to leave positive feedback for all transactions that go well. If I have bought something from you and you see positive feedback from me, please take it as a sign that I have received your merchandise in good order. If I somehow forget, please remind me. When I sell, I always attempt to leave a positive feedback when I receive payment in a timely fashion. Again if I miss, please email me. I will be happy do discuss anything either before or after the sale with anyone over the telephone. If you wish to talk to me, please email me and I will respond with a number at which you may reach me. Alternately I am willing to call you. I will be happy to help anyone establish a deserved good reputation here at ebay, BUT please don't try and scam me. I have a long, long memory and will make every attempt to see justice done and your life on ebay a short one. I will also be happy to answer any questions that anyone mayave about folks that I have done business with at an earlier time. I have been active on ebay since December 16, 1997.

Other Sellers

There are a number of regular sellers on the antiques books & manuscripts section. In particular imabrit@pipeline.com, jdderosa@ix.netcom.com, jpb@netunlimited.net, satchmo, barnabys, and ruwach. I have done business with all of these good folks and I can recommend them highly. You will find that in general, folks who are selling Bibles and Bible leaves here on ebay to be a most pleasant and good bunch of folks. It has been one of the nicer ebay experiences to have met all of these sellers.

Rare, Very Rare & Etc.
I do not like to use any hype in describing the books I am selling. In particular; "Rare", "Very Rare", "Profoundly Rare" are expressions that I do not like to use. By their very nature, any given title from the 16th and 17th century in a good state of preservation is infrequently seen. Please approach any auction in the Antiques/Books-Manuscripts section using these expressions with a high degree of suspicion.
