A good way to improve collecting knowledge is to study old auction catalogs. Many ask "What is Original?" and "What is Worth Conservation?" When a Poster is called "original" it means that it is from the first print run, and regarding its intended use, is official. (Original posters are usually of higher value than reproductions or reprints)Posters printed to advertise an event, movie, festival, product, exhibition, anniversary, Government warnings and other notices and propaganda. An original Poster, though a printed piece, and one out of possibly thousands is NOT considered a 'reprint', reproduction, recreation, bootleg, copy or reissue. Posters which are referred to as "reprint",etc. come from a later printing. In short: A printed Poster is an 'original' poster (not originally intended for sale), when it is from its first and official print run. The word 'original' does not mean the 'one-of-a-kind' artwork created to make the poster, for that is not a poster, but the illustration used for the poster (The poster is the Printed piece, with type in place, etc) VALUE Sometimes when an old poster has become very expensive (say for example $50,000 for the original) and sought after, several reproductions could show up on the market, normally at a fraction of the cost of an original. Often inferior in printing some of these could be official reprints and even done thru lithography, resulting in a higher standard for a reprint. while other reprints would be cheaper photo-separated fakes. ARTISTS Often certain posters (or poster artists) become more sought after, collected and therefore more valuable than others; as time passes, their value can go quite high. Posters for The Moulin Rouge by Toulous-Lautrec get prices higher than $90,000 today. Even the Theatrical One sheet poster (Style B) for Star Wars (1977) has sold repeatedly for over $2000. Watch for which of todays artists and designers will be the collactable artists of tomorrow: people like Bob Peak, Richard Amsel, and Frank Frazetta, whose posters are already soaring in value and recognition.
