Richard's Life in Retail Since 1969 I have been in the retail trade. I had just come out of the service, and was looking for a job while attending UCSB. I found a job at the local True Value hardware store, Santa Ynez Valley Hardware. That was when the SYV was still a small community made of farmers and ranchers with a few eastern, and western millionaires for color. To keep this short, after I graduated from UCSB I took over as the manager at Harrison Hardware in Santa Ynez. It was a store my father had started in the early 70's. I have really enjoyed the retail trade, most of the time. I learned that reputation is everything, in small town business, that and money managment. In many ways I prefer eBay to brick and mortar, because sellers and buyers are all rated and are, usually respectful and professional. In retail, in a larger community, rudeness has returned to our society, and retailers carry the brunt of it. On eBay we all carry our feedback in our histories, kind of like a small town. Much better. My other interests have been coin collecting since I was very young, though you won't find many coins in my store. I have played a little music, and, in general, lived the SC life style. I started to collect Christmas ornaments in the 80's. At the time I didn't even know I was a collector. It is like an addiction. Now I have well over a thousand. I buy new ones but some old and some that I have descided no longer fit in the collection will find their way to eBay. I also read a lot, so I will occasionally have books in my little store, plus other media; like DVD's. I still have connections in the hardware business, so you will find deals from the local hardware stores on occasion.
