Me, a f-e-w years ago
|
My dad was born in 1899 and my mother in 1906. They were both only children and got married in 1930. My sister was born in 1934 and me in 1938. My sister never married or had any children. My sister had delusions of grandeur during the 50s and 60s, buying tons of costume jewelry, clothing and other items she never wore or had any use for. My dad died in 1968, and after that mother got into traveling and went to Hawaii twice, Germany twice, Switzerland once and Mexico numerous times. She bought out the muumuu factory (material) and the bead factory in Hawaii, making everyone muumuus and crocheting necklaces and rings. Eventually she formed her own tour business with mostly short, weekend type trips by bus aimed at Senior citizens. Her biggest trip included riding the train from the Texas border through the Copper Canyon in Mexico. She brought my family back many items. My mother and sister were killed in a bus wreck on one of her tours to Branson, Missouri, in 1980. Most family items I grew up with and can testify to and verify. However, in 1980, when I had to clean out my mother's house, I was astounded at what I found. I found many items I am not sure where they came from...i.e., Germany, Hawaii, Switzerland, Mexico, or Ardinger's (import business in Brookhollow Industrial District in Irving, Texas, where my mother lived). She kept Ardinger's in business during the time every year it was open to the public. My mother had an affinity for pretty things. She had tons of pink depression glass, carnival glass, pattern glass, cut glass, and all sorts of silverware, cookbooks, tablecloths, quilts, jewelry, game items, card tables, you just name it from the 1800s right up to her death in 1980. She had service for 12 pink ice tea, water and sherbert stemware, salad plates and cups and saucers. I have never been able to identify the maker or pattern. Mother told me she bought them at Grant's in Wichita Falls, Texas, in the 1930s. When we had the minister and his family to our house for dinner during the 40s, we ate in the dining room and she loved to use her pink stuff, especially her pink ice bucket and pink pitcher. My dad's mother lived in Springfield, Mo., and we drove there twice a year, staying at the same Bates Motel tourist bungalow enroute every trip. Mother had all the antique stores between Wichita Falls and Springfield nailed down. My dad, sister and I thought she was funny. I bought a gorgeous cut glass pitcher for $7.00 at one of those antique stores. I remember it so well because the store owner wanted $8.00 and mother wouldn't pay it. I was about 12 years old and went back in and talked the owner down to $7.00 and bought it. Of course, I now have this pitcher, along with everything else. My mother never threw anything out...not even burned out light bulbs, nonworking airconditioners, sinks, broken down recliners, nylons and match folders from EVERY place she ever entered. I was married 42 years, so I also have a lot of things of my own. My husband died in 1999. In 2004, I moved from a big home to a smaller home, and now have most of their stuff and my stuff boxed and stored in my garage. I am no antique expert. I do not know the value of things. I didn't know the Coors Rosebud I ate on every day of my life until I got married was Coors Rosebud until I saw it on eBay a few years ago. I figured out one of the carnival glass bowls was Northwood's Poppy Show and another one was Fenton's Carnival Holly. I have worked since I got married at 17. I was RN64 when I first started on eBay and I turned RN71 this past June. As you see, I am a RN and I still work part time in ICU. I want to retire. I want to travel. I want to do something besides work. I need to get rid of a lot of this stuff. I thought eBay would be a good venue for this effort. You can help by bidding and buying. Thanks! Bettye RN64
