The dial uses a very thin disc of amorphous Silicon under the dial to convert light energy into electrical energy through a photovoltaic process. The electrical energy is then stored in a special energy storage cell. Citizen Watches in particular has an entire line devoted this solar technology, known as their 'Eco-Drive' timepieces. .
