HI! WELCOME TO MY PERSONAL PAGE I am a retired Provincial Director of Human Resources who worked in the Healthcare field. I still keep my hand in doing a few Union negotiations. I live in a small town in Central Alberta, Canada. My hobbies are vintage radios and fishing. THE RADIO NUT Vintage radios are my hobby and my passion. I learned how to repair them from my Dad, who was in the radio and TV repair business for many years. When he passed away, I brought all his equipment, tubes, parts and the hundreds of radios he collected, out to Alberta. I sell a few radios and parts every once and a while in order to keep the hobby going; but, my wife is not impressed when I fill the house with old radios. I love the moment when I manage to get an old chassis going that has not played for fifty years or more. Please email me with any questions and I will be glad to answer them. RADIO ESSENTIALS The radios I offer for auction on eBay have all been dissassembled, cleaned and lubricated. All tubes have been checked and weak ones replaced if required. Capacitors and resistors have also been replaced if necessary and thus the radios are electrically sound. I describe the radios to the best of my ability. If I make a dial cover or replacement back - I mention it. I do not sell bakelite radios with cracks because I do not have bakelite radios with cracks. I do refinish some wooden radios. I use lacquer and/or toned lacquers just like they did originally and the finish is very good. I usually put a fair amount of hours into a radio before it goes on EBay - suffice it to say, I don't make any money selling radios on eBay, I break about even. It is a hobby that tends to be self sustaning and thats what I really like about it. A WORD ABOUT PACKING Buying radios on eBay is a crap shoot. I have bought too many radios on eBay that arrive damaged from improper packing. Although double boxing is a good method, it greatly increases the shipping cost because of the added volume it creates. I usually get a good price for my radios and so I do not charge extra for handling and materials. All the radios that I ship are first wrapped in plastic wrap and delecate areas such as dials, speaker cloth or backs are given added protection. I then place the radio into a box that has been lined with one inch styrofoam and filled with styrofoam peanuts. Additional styrofoam pieces are cut and hot glued into the corners to ensure the sides cannot be pushed in. I ensure there is adequate space between the radio and the sides of the internal structure. The box is then more than strong enough to withstand the rigors of the postal system. DOES IT WORK OR NOT? If the seller does not mention if the radio works or not - ask them. You may also want to ask how well it works - any noise, squeals or hum. These noises are all repairable, but generally a radio that is playing well is worth much more than one that is not, specially if you cannot repair it yourself. Be sceptical of the following phrase: SOLD AS IS - this usually means it ain't working, it's most likely broken and you can't return it. Other phrases to beware of are: it was playing great when I last turned it on a year ago, I have no way to test it, the plug has been cut off, the cord is in bad shape. All of this may be true - but it also usually means there are problems with the radio and thus should lower it's final sale price. A FINAL THOUGHT If you are purchasing a radio on eBay, ask the seller lots of questions. Condition is everything and the final price will reflect it. A crack or broken dial can bring the price down by fifty percent. Make sure you get a shipping quote and be aware if there are additional handling costs. Further, beware of the word RARE. There are still a lot of great looking old radios out there but most are not rare. |
