I love trading cards! I love the collecting, the hunt, and the discoveries. As much as anything else, I love researching the cards, completing checklists, and passing on what I learn to other collectors in the hopes that they'll get as excited about collecting a set as I am.
As with all collecting pursuits, the collector first needs to set boundaries on what they collect. I believe the narrower your focus, the more fun you'll have. Besides, you can't collect everything. As much as I love sports, I have found that non-sport trading cards are the collectible niche which really excites me.
In particular, I limit myself to only those trading cards issued in the United States. On my web site, you'll find me offering all types of trading cards. What you'll soon discover, is that I have a particular affinity for trading cards which were premium issues.
A premium issue trading card is one which was acquired as a bonus for making another purchase. This may have been a pack or cigarettes, a pack of caramel, a box of cereal, a bag of potato chips, or a candy bar for example.
Originally, those trading cards issued with bubble gum, were, in themselves, premiums to sell more gum. The thrill in collecting trading cards, and in particular premium trading cards, is that you typically were not able to just "buy" a complete set at your hobby store. You had to really work to assemble the set. That's where the fun lies!
So, that having been said, what I mostly collect and deal in are non-sport trading cards which were not issued simply as trading cards. Anyone can go down to the local hobby store and buy a full box of trading cards and sit down and quickly put together a set. There's no challenge in that.
Enjoy! - Ron
