I've spent 20 years in the heavy-duty truck and trailer industry sourcing products and developing brands for some of the biggest truck parts names in the business. Big rig drivers and fleet owners demand reliable, high-quality products for their commerical vehicles - and we've delivered. I've personally toured many factories in my many trips to Asia, and seen the best (and worst) of what they can produce. We've rejected a lot of products and factories over the years, but we have found a core of suppliers who consistently produce the kind of quality demanded by people who drive their rigs over a hundred-thousand miles a year. Those are the kinds of factories we contract with to produce our products.
My first product group is air horns. Detroit has cheapened the factory horns on todays cars and trucks, which probably saves them a few bucks per vehicle. Their horns still meet the minimum standards required, but that's about it. Nowadays, instead of having dual 110 or 115db high/low tone horns, you usually just get one 105db single tone. Nobody likes a wimpy horn. More and more pickup, SUV, Hummer and 4X4 drivers are replacing their factory horns with much louder air horns. If you just spent $25k to $60k for a vehicle, you want it to have a horn that has a little authority to it, not something that's just a step up from a bicycle horn. I started Safe Vehicle Products to bring that kind of quality product to the rest of America, not just the commercial vehicle market.
There's a lot of horns sold on Ebay, but it's not all apples-to-apples comparisons. A lot of horns which look very similar can be made from different materials. A 3 bell train horn made from chrome plated zinc is a lot cheaper than a 3 bell train horn made from chrome plated brass. But the brass one wil have much greater corrosion resistance than the zinc one. Once you get a few rock chips in the chrome plating of a zinc horn, corrosion will set in. Now I don't have a problem with people selling zinc horns, there's a market out there which demands that price point. But for crying out loud sellers, admit it's zinc! Many sellers don't tell what their horns are made from, hoping that you don't know the difference. We will always tell you what our horns are made from.
Along with high quality train and other air horns, in the near future we will also be offering inexpensive yet excellent quality automotive aftermarket type poly air horns.
When you're ready to upgrade your truck, SUV, RV, or even car from factory horn to an air horn, check out my list of auctions.
No more wimpy OEM horns!
