Preparation
|
My garden is on a clean piece of land which was never used before. It was covered with weeds and wild grasses for centuries before I started planting tobacco. I am already self-sufficient for several years. The booklet 'How To Make Your Own Tobacco' shows step by step, how easy this can be. Please do not try to smoke uncured tobacco leaves. You will not like the harsh taste :( The commercial tobacco farmers often resort to phosphate fertilizers when growing tobacco. However, phosphate fertilizers contain a natural occurring radioactive radon, which the plants pick up. When burned, this radon is making polonium, which we then inhale into our lungs. Now you know, why I garden organically. And my plants are getting water only from the rain or a nearby well. No chlorinated city or town water.
First picture: Composted cow manure is delivered by a truck. Spreading everything and then working the soil. A few days after transplanting, my tobacco plants are doing fine. There no need for you to go through such elaborate garden work. I do it only because it is my greatest hobby and I want to supply my customers with the best seeds.

Growing Time
|
Second picture: Look at the size of these plants! And they still have time left to grow. Much more than I can ever use within one year. The largest plants of this variety can produce a whooping 200 grams (0.44 pounds) of tobacco :) I have only one tobacco variety growing in this garden. Others are at different locations to avoid cross pollination. Every plant is getting measured, some are marked with a red band and their growing progress is being recorded. Close to harvest time, the seeds are getting sorted into 'Grade A' and 'Grade B'. The seedpods from plants below the sizes of the 'Grade B', will be destroyed in the fire pit. Sorry! I do not use them and my customers would not be happy with them either. There are still plenty of better seeds available.
Take care of your plants and they will show you, what they can do.
You need:
1. Good seeds 2. A warm place for the germination 3. Fertile soil 4. Plenty of daylight 5. Proper watering
Tobacco can grow in any region of the world. They need just only 100 to 130 frost free days of growing time in the garden. If you wish your plants to develop plenty of seeds, then planting some catnip is advisable. This herb strongly draws bees for the pollination into your garden. There are also other benefits for the hobby tobacco planter to have this plant around. See my auction with the 4 seed packages for more information. Growing tobacco is not difficult neither is it too time-consuming. You can even grow tobacco plants in large pots! No greenhouse is needed, it saves a good amount of money and it also provides a better product.
Wishing you a good harvest
