Grandma and Me: Two Seamstresses
|
From the time I was a child, I loved clothing. I was never allowed to look through teen magazines, designer magazines, or any kind of magazines due to the articles that tend to go along with the pretty pictures, mostly sexual in nature. My mother allowed me to sew as many clothes as I wanted for school from age 7, but we could only afford to buy one new pair of shoes and one outfit from the store at the beginning of each school year. My father was the principal of the school I attended through 8th grade. My mother loved garage sales and thrift stores. I was allowed to buy as many outfits as she had money for on our early Saturday morning outings. That was a highlight in my week!!
I was sick often and missed weeks at a time of school, which didn't affect my grades (remember who the principal was LOL), but affected my immune system. Being a naturalist, my mother had also been raised to stay away from doctors, so she gave me multiple vitamins and herbs to try to bring down fevers of over 105 that would last weeks to months on and off. I remember going to a doctor twice in my childhood, once when I had been in bed for three weeks and my aunt, who was a nurse, came to visit. She sneaked me off to the doctor and one shot of penicillian later, I was perfectly fine! It was like a miracle! My mother was furious, of course, and later that night I heard muffled shouting of poison drugs and damaging me for life between her and her younger sister, but I was happy, no fever, and no ear pain.
Sometimes my glands in my neck would swell up so much that I pretended to be a bullfrog for the day; making gurgling, gutteral noises in the back of my throat, and drawing pictures of frogs wearing different outfits that I would make for them to go out dancing. It was during one of these times that, after six weeks of frogs and fever, my father scooped me up and took me to a doctor. He took some blood tests and diagnosed me with mononucleosis. I was only 11, and appalled that this virus suggested I had been kissing boys in order to have my neck swollen, but because it was extremely contagious, and I had been undiagnosed for so long, it was basically untreatable. Mr. Doctor even mentioned that I could have problems later in life, and that my throat would be permanently swollen to some degree, since glands that remain the size mine had stayed for so long never fully shrink.
Fast forward to 2 years ago when I, as a school counselor with two degrees, began calling in sick to work several times each week. At the age of 26, soon after my mother passed away from ovarian cancer, after not seeing a doctor herself for over 17 years, I began fervently making regular appointments with my family doctor whenever I was sick for more than 3 days. Two years ago, after seeing numerous specialists, including a rheumatologist, neurologist, reproductive endocrinologist, and continuing with my family doctor, I was diagnosed with a basket of medical, untreatable, progressive diseases.
The rheumatologist diagnosed me with rheumatoid arthritis in my hips, severe fibromyalgia, which is the disease mentioned that can occur if one has untreated mononucleosis as a child, the Epstein-Barr virus remains in the blood, and manifests as fibromyalgia later in life, especially in women.
The neurologist ordered a sleep study done, that revealed severe bruxism, restless leg, periodic limb movement disorder, and my sleep never reached past REM stage 2. I learned that in order for the body to rejuvinate itself and heal to the point of being able to fight off other illnesses and viruses, it needed to at least reach stage 4 for an hour or more. She advised me not to work with children, as they were 'walking petrie dishes' and I would most likely be calling in sick at any school, hence the frequent absences at my current school 2 years ago.
My RE confirmed stage 4 endometriosis, a progressive female disease that had invaded so many vital organs in my abdomen, he refused to do surgery on me for this condition again, especially since the last time in 2003, which had resulted in one less ovary and a life-threatening abcess with infection. I am currently hoping to find a specialist who will take my state medical to have surgery that will cut away all the adhesions and scar tissue wrapping around my intestines and many other organs in my lower abdomen. Other women who have this condition have written that giving birth for them was similar to a headache in comparison to the pain they have from advanced stage endometriosis. I never have given birth, but feel like it for about 10-15 days out of the month.
So, about two years ago, my doctors finally convinced me to say farewell to my school counseling career, one that I had obtained two college degrees to do; a degree in art education/certified K-12, and a master's degree in counseling psychology, with which I had enjoyed ten years of social work, career counseling, special needs therapy, and finally, elementary school counseling. It was sad to leave the children. I felt energized around them, and loved my job at a small, country school across the street from the beach here in Hawaii. But God had other plans for me.
I filed for disability in 2006, and my lawyer warned me that it could be up to a year or so before my court hearing was scheduled. I had saved enough money to live comfortably for that time period. In the meantime, I began working with material and sewing outfits for myself; suddenly I had more time than I knew what to do with! I had so many brand new clothes, with the tags still attached, that I didn't know what to do with!! One of my friends had encouraged me to try selling on ebay. I loved buying clothing that is unavailable here in Hawaii from mainland sellers, and had quite a closet full, with several seller friends who encouraged me to try it also. I listed a few items for much less than they were worth, and people actually bid on them! How exciting! I could lie down when I was tired of being on the computer, and mail out my sales on my time!
So, all in all, ebay has really become a big part of my life now. Instead of one year, it turned into two years I waited for my hearing, and as a single parent of two adopted kids, one in college and one in high school, I needed a way to support them since my ex was not paying child support. Ebay gave me a chance to meet mostly wonderful, caring people who helped me through this tough time! I love finding the perfect item for customers, and will go the extra mile to make sure my customers are happy!! Thank you, to all who have read my story and have shopped in my fun store!! A BIG ALOHA FROM ME!!

She Sells Seashells...but I sell cool clothing on EBAY!

Selling from Hawaii to people all over the world is a wonderful experience. I have met the most caring people on ebay, and enjoy giving honest advice about any item in my store. I love the beach, and when I am not on my computer, I can be found about once a week, sitting in the warm sand and watching my kids surf, something I am unable to do anymore. The climate here in Hawaii is perfect for my conditions, and my doctors all agree that living in a place where there are severe weather changes would make my conditions much worse. I have many Hawaiian clothes to choose from, some great, brand new surfer brands, and a variety of items that can only be found in Hawaii. I even have a 'Hawaiian Snack Pack" found in my 'other' section, for Hawaiians that are looking for the local snacks that can only be found here in the islands. I will gladly put together care packages with your favorite non-perishables!!
