My biggest reason for making this page, was not really to tell you about myself, but to stress the IMPORTANCE of proper car seats and their installation!! Many children die every year due to improperly installed car seats, or by being in the wrong car seat for their age/wieght! I feel that this information is not offered easy enough to parents. I bet most of you have never heard of a child Safety Seat Inspection Station. I only know what I know because my husband was trained to install car seats by the state a few years ago, to work at an Inspection station. Had it not been for him, I would not have known all I do because it's not all in the instructions. For example, Did you know that if you do not have an infant at the correct angle, they could stop breathing! Or that not only does your child have to be 30lbs. they also have to be 12 months. Most people just think, ''oh he's growing to big to be rear facing, so lets just turn him around''. WRONG!! There bones are not strong enough to up stand a car accident forward facing until 12 months. In fact we would all be safer rear facing! So the longer, the better! Anyways, it scares me knowing how many people just do not know, because the info is hard to find. So I have a few links and some information below that I hope will help you travel safely!

Car Seat Basics

  • Kids 12 and under should ALWAYS ride in the back seat. This cuts their risk of death by 36%.
  • Kids should be in a carseat or booster until they can be seated properly in a seatbelt.  For most kids, this is around 8 years old or 4' 9'' tall, but proper seatbelt fit is the most important factor.
  • Never place a rear-facing car seat in the front seat when there is an active frontal airbag.
  • Keep your baby rear-facing as long as possible.  That can mean up to 30 or 35 pounds in most current convertible seats unless they outgrow it by height first.
  • All current car seats pass government safety standards.   Select the one that best fits your child, your vehicle and your budget.  Some models do have different features; select one that has the features that will allow you to use it correctly EVERY trip.
  • Always read the owners manuals for your vehicle and car seat thoroughly.  They often contain specific information about car seat installation that may not be obvious.  Some models may vary from what you would expect.
  • Make sure that the harness fits snug on your child, the car seat fits snug in your vehicle, and that your vehicle seatbelts are locked properly.
  • When you buy a car seat, make sure you have a good return policy in case it doesn't fit or in case you find you don't like it.  Have your seat inspected by a certified technician for free at a checkup event or fitting station.
  • Please avoid used car seats, especially those over 6 years old, those with an unknown history that may have been in a crash, those that show any form of cracks or damage and those with missing labels, model number, manufacturing date, instructions or parts.
  • Please give driving your complete, unimpaired attention and wear your own seatbelt all the time.  These two simple steps are among these easiest ways you can protect yourself and your passengers from injury or death

The universally accepted response is to keep your child rear facing to AT LEAST one year of age AND 20 pounds in weight.  So many people forget the AND. That is a very important part! In fact, it is preferable to keep your child rear-facing as long as possible, and that may mean up to 30 or 35 pounds for most convertible car seats!

Importance of Rear Facing

  • Rear-facing is safest for both adults and children, but especially for babies, who would face a greater risk of spinal cord injury in a front-facing car seat during a frontal crash.
  • Rear-facing car seats spread frontal crash forces over the whole area of a baby's back, head and neck; they also prevent the head from snapping relative to the body in a frontal crash.
  • Rear-facing car seats may not be quite as effective in a rear end crash, but severe frontal and frontal offset crashes are far more frequent and far more severe than severe rear end crashes.
  • Rear-facing car seats are NOT a safety risk just because a baby's legs are bent at the knees or because they can touch/kick the vehicle seat.
  • Rear-facing as long as possible is the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatricians, and can reduce injuries and deaths.   Motor Vehicle Crashes are the #1 overall cause of death for children 14 and under.

Installation of the seat is crucial. An improperly installed seat becomes a danger to the child and to other passengers in the car.
The restraint straps should be properly fitted to ensure that the child is held snugly and comfortably against the seat. A well-fitted seat will not allow a child to lean forward or slide his arms out of the straps.
The most important tip? Children should ride in a safety seat every time they are in the car, even for short trips. Most accidents happen within a five-mile radius of the home.
There are many resources available for assistance with installation, use and purchasing a seat. Manufacturers like Britax have Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians on call in their consumer services department (1-888-427-4829 or www.britaxusa.com) to instruct and assist in the proper installation and usage of Britax seats.
Parents and caregivers can visit local police and some fire departments for help installing and using the seat properly. Retailers who sell child safety seats may also have experts on staff to assist.
There is no excuse for an improper child safety restraint in a moving vehicle.
