Thank you for your information requests about silversmithing. Here is brief overview for the beginner. Working in silver or gold can be a pretty expensive hobby, though you can make money if you are willing to put the time into marketing what you produce. You can do this by doing local arts/crafts shows or through flea markets, etc., (also check into any local Rock and Mineral Clubs - they also have/sponsor regular shows). The equipment necessary to work with silver wire is fairly basic. If you are just working with wire and not soldering you can get by with my 6 piece tool set, plus my anvil, hammer, saw set. These are basic hand tools for bending, cutting and shaping wire and sheet. I would also suggest getting my basic bead stringing book, (Flash Jewelry Making and Repair Techniques, by Therese Spears). This book is inexpensive and covers all basic stringing and repair issues. Stringing beads is very good therapy and does not cost much to get started. You can generate money by just telling your friends and family members that you can string or re-string beads for them, (for a fee). Basic knotting rates range from $1.00 - $2.00 per inch, (depending on bead size, $1.00 per inch for 8mm and larger, $2.00 per inch for 6mm and smaller). Soldering is another issue entirely. Start with a butane pencil soldering torch, (inexpensive thru any good home improvement supply). You also need a soldering pad, a tripod, a respirator, eye protection, and equipment to clean your soldered pieces, (skalex, copper tongs, a crock pot), and some type of grinding and polishing tools. Polishing wheels, and rouge and bobbing compound. With the exception of the torch and grinder and crock pot, all of these items are available for purchase in my eBay store. Also, go to http://www.silversmithsupply.com/images/soldersheet.jpg for basic soldering information. I would suggest that you go to your local library and check out anything on Silversmithing you find. It is such a broad subject it really requires a book to outline all that you would need, plus all of the safety issues that you should know. I personally would recommend you use extreme care in planning your work space with adequate ventilation (fume removal), use a respirator and full face shield when soldering, grinding or buffing.
