The Artifact Room
Welcome to all who walk the fields and streams in search of stone treasure
My family and I started collecting in 1971, looking in the fields and streams of Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Nebraska, South and North Dakota. I am a member of the Central States Archarological Society, Hawkeye State Archaeological Society, and the Iowa Archaeological Society. My best personal finds are a nice 3" clovis, found in Lewis Co. Missouri, in 1978, and a very nice polished black hemitite plummet, found in Ralls Co., Missouri along the Salt river in the late 1970's. My wife, Bonnie, found a fine 7" polished flint Pick in Hancock co. Illinois, a very nice 4" Agate basin, and 3" Dalton along Bear Creek in Adams Co., Illinois, all 3 were found in the 1980's, son Brian found what may be one of our rarest finds, a very well made flint "Thunderbird' effigy found in Lewis Co., Missouri in the 1980's. We first thought it was a broken drill, but after cleaning off the field dirt it was a shock to see a "real" flint thunderbird effigy. Only a few of these rare "real" ones have turned up and most that I know of were found near Quincy Illinois area.
A few of my favorite's
In the mid 1970's, I purchased some very fine artifacts from the Paul Kline collection here in central Iowa. Paul had passed away in 1971, and the family allowed me to select a few objects from his extensive very fine collection. Three of the objects I picked out were, a fine Hopewell pipe found near Toolsboro Iowa, a very fine Wisconsin Winged Bannerstone, found in 1935 in a creek, in Benton Co., Iowa, and an very rare (for Iowa) Birdstone, found in Fayette Co., Iowa along the Turkey River about 50 miles from the famous Effigy Mound area of N.E. Iowa. Once in awhile you get a chance to own something very special, and my chance came a few years ago when a close friend remembered that I had told him I would someday like to own the original cache of Holland blades that he had gotten from the finder, Warren Holland. Shown in the image below are 5 of the 14 original "Holland" blades from that cache.
Part of the original "HOLLAND" cache, longest is a bit over 5" long
