Below is a general idea as to how we grade vinyl. It is some what conservative and we try to be as thorough as possible when listing blemishes or any specific problems with each LP we list, but we are not completely anal retentive (so if you are, save all parties trouble and do not bid, as if you are super conservative you probably shouldn't be buying LP's online where items are site unseen as opinions do differ).
This is how we've been grading records since we started selling on ebay back in 2004 and our feedback (which is 95% vinyl sales) can attest to the fact that we are honest and fair graders.
Near Mint means almost as if new, though nothing is every visually perfect. Remember, this is NEAR mint. Not mint. Plays just about perfectly though, which is what should be most important! May have very few surface scratches or scuffs that do not harm play in the slightest and most likely came from being put in sleeve either by previous owner or at the factory where it was pressed.
VG++ is a very lightly handled copy. Very minor wear. A few light marks that do not affect play, but more surface scratches than a NM copy and maybe a slight hint of noise between tracks. Plays close to NM though.
VG+ is a solid copy. May have very few-to many surface scratches that don't really harm play, as well as a few more significant marks but all in all a great listen with next to no or VERY light surface noise when played but nothing major or consistent that should really catch your ear. May have very minor scratch or two that causes soft click for a VERY short amount of time. An occasional pop may be heard as well.
VG is a well used copy but still a great player. There will be slightly more noticeable surface noise and the occasional light click caused by a scratch here and there that may last a little while and be more evident. Maybe a few random light pops through out the record. Surface noise will be more consistent than a VG+ but still quite faint and never riding above the music. Most of the noise will be noticed in between tracks and softer passages.
G will have light but pretty consistent surface noise, some louder pops and longer clicks from scratches. A well worn record, but one that can still be enjoyed though there will be some distracting noise at times, especially in quiet parts.
Records should not skip and did not on our turntable when play tested (unless specifically noted in the listing) though this is not a guarantee that the record will not skip on your turntable. We really scrutinize VG's and G's to make sure they are worth selling because the one thing we hate is a record that skips! We generally only list VG or G's as bargain LP's of stuff that goes for considerably more in better condition or if they are rare in some capacity.
