KILL THE MUSIC?

About me page.

WELCOME!

I am not into blowing my horn, but have been requested to AT LEAST attempt to give you a background.

My background and interests:

Let's put it this way .. I draw Social security (and leave it at that!) Spent 14 years in broadcasting and over 30 years in live sound, communications, and telecommunications. For 7 1/2 years after retirement I acted as primary care giver to my parents. Mom passed away in January 2002, and Dad left us in November of 2004.
I dabble in model railroading, photography, music(of course) and computers (where I started on an 8086 LONG before there was a web!)
(Current description of my machines are below.)

Do NOT buy or install US Robotics or 3Com modems unless you do not want service from them! Although the product itself is generally good, their service is the worst of all major manufacturers. Sending an item back on an RMA will result in getting back a lesser item instead of the item sent .. in otherwords they STEAL your modem and send you the cheapest thing they have left in stock!!

.................................................

WARNING!! WARNING!!

DANGER!!
Will Robinson DANGER!!

This is all about two VERY BIG Windows "protection" scams that are now going around. And, there may be .. and will be, more of them.
These two scams at present are:

STOP SIGN
and
FINALLY FAST

For those of you that have already bought into the tube scams for "fixing" your computer, you are OUT OF LUCK. Only a qualified tech can recover your data, clean the drive, and re-install your Windows system and your programs. And the tech still may not be able recover ALL of your programs and data.

A good search on Google PRIOR to installing either of the above would have led you to the fact that instead of protecting you computer, these programs install their own malware. Mostly in the form of "phone home" trojans that let the sellers of that garbage keep track of what YOU are doing .. in turn, that information is sold to advertisers, along with your eMail address and suddenly you start getting all of the this spam that somehow fits your lifestyle and preferences in your inbox!

The first major clue should be that Web Of Trust (on Firefox) tells you when you search that their home sites are totally untrustworthy!

Another clue would be the outrageous claims made by the program developers. Things like the claim by Finally Fast that they can increase your internet speed for "UP TO 375%" .. (notice no decimal point)(and totally impossible!), just by installing their "web accelerator" program. (a tracker in disguise .. it too, phones home!)

And let's face it. IF you have an existing anti-virus program and it alerts when the scan(s) are installed .. SOMETHING IS WRONG and most likely it is NOT your current anti-virus program!
If you also have a spyware protection program and it alerts .. guess what!!
Or the browser alarm goes off and tells you that something is trying to re-write your browser .. just wonder what it could be?

Also, when you look at the commercial for Finally Fast, note that all of the computers they use in it are MACS!!

A Forum Discussion of Stop Sign

A Discussion on Finally Fast

Thefollowing You Tube uploads show you just HOW much of a scam Finally Fast Really is. The THIRD one is the real kicker!! Note what the lying woman says about how "free" protection programs are just virus files and not to be trusted!!
You Tube "Support Response" One
You Tube "Support Response" Two
You Tube "Support Response" Three

And the thing is that Stop Sign makes the same outrageous statements when you do their live help!

Do you want an accurate CLOCK for your Windows set-up? One that counts off the seconds and makes that sniping a lot easier, for instance? (or even give you the actual date and time, since Windows tends to be a little lax in time keeping!) Then these two little programs will do it fine for you.

One install on Vista DOES work, but no guarantee. FOR CERTAIN it will not work on machines running 64 bit operating systems.

The first is TClockEX

installing this very flexable program will give you the display you want. I ususally set it for Day, Date and hours/minutes/seconds and base it on a 12 hour clock (your options for how the clock displays are pretty amazing and you can change your mind!)
Now be sure you get the clock modification software from the site I linked as there is another out there that is spelled slightly differently and is SPYWARE!

The second is atomachron

(the original site of "one guy coding" (the developer) has closed down for lack of funding, but he still maintains the feed at Softpedia.)
You download and install this clock synchronization tool and your Windows clock that wanders all over the time zones will now function accurately! Amazing!!

Now you have what Linux and Mac users have had for years, an ACCURATE clock!

Why Linux?????????

First, If you are a dedicated gamer, at present ANY version of Linux is not really for you. Most game writers don't write for anything other than game boxes and Windows based PC's. That MAY change if and when people migrate away from Windows, but at the current rate, that will be some time.
(there are some programs that run Windows programs within Linux, but relying on them to provide your gaming experience to the fullest, really is impractical at present. The WINE project is on going and constantly improving, but are usually one step behind the gaming comunity. That MAY change, but not for now.)
OR
You have a totally dedicated MS Media Controller. Linux is CLOSE, but no cigar yet!

Second, If your favorite program does not have a substitute on this list:
http://www.linuxalt.com/
and you just MUST have it at your disposal at all times, then Linux is not for you.
(Quicken is a good example .. the substitutes are weak at present ... And there is ANYTHING Adobe.)

Third, you need an open mind.
Linux is NOT Windows and does not strive to BE Windows. It strives to be an ALTERNATIVE to Windows. It DOES use a GUI (Graphic user interface) including drop down menus, but Windows did NOT originate that Idea. The basis for Linux is an open source version of Unix, an operating system that existed long before Windows.
So, it will take a few hours of your time for a week or so to learn how to use the system. (about the same amount of time you spend on Windows updating your protection and cleaning the bad guys and all the left over trash out of there.)
Linux users are a "COMMUNITY" that take time to educate and help. Just lurking and searching on any Linux forum will usually get you the answer you need .. and no $39.00 per hour service charge to get your answers.

Now some reasons:
If you have become sick of crashes for no PHYSICAL reason (you have tested your processor and ram and all hardware and they pass with flying colors), yet SOMETHING is causing a crash.
Linux (on a desktop) seldom crashes (can't say never, as it IS possible, just never SEEN it do so!)

If you are tired of having to re-boot to re-set your system, or because of a program install, or whatever. (re-boots for SYSTEM updates are the exception.)

If you can't cut off a locked program and stop it so you can get back to work without re-booting.

If you are generally disgusted with the amount of time you have to devote just to MAINTAINING your computer to keep it up and running.
Linux needs NONE of that except activating the furnished firewall if you are not behind a network firewall.

If you are considering replacing your current desktop just because it is "SLOW AND OUTDATED".

If you are really tired of updates/upgrades making your existing hardware obsolete.

If you want to get a LOT longer life out of your existing configuration without maxing out the credit card.
Linux half life is about 6 years with some running even longer.

(You will note that this really applies to DESKTOP computers and not LAPTOPS.
Because of the very highly proprietary nature of the hardware of the majority of laptops, converting to Linux is a TOTAL CRAPSHOOT.
However, several MAJOR manufacturers offer pre loaded Linux laptops (Dell, Acer, Toshiba to cite some (outdated list here: http://linuxpreloaded.com/).
Most Netbooks come pre loaded with either, but the MS chopped up version of XP that was rushed out to compete, does NOT compete as far as stability and ease of use on those. (They MAY get that corrected soon.))

AND .. you are absolute fed up with shelling out bucks for third party software programs that work, but not the way you thought they would work. AND searching all over the web for them .. with the chance of dowloading and installing some form of malware lurking in the back of your mind.
Linux programs are FREE, and the are all in few places (called repositories) that work out of an INSTALLER within the operating system/desktop program PLUS they have been pre-sceened and tested to WORK.
(added bonus ... un-installing any program is a snap and does NOT require a trip into the registry (there IS no registry) to remove latent traces of the program.)

Then there the thousands of scams being sold to supposedly "protect" your Windows computer both on the web and on your local television.

Yea, just a few reasons, there!
