stamptraveller?
If it was only that simple...
You may have seen the movie "Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller" in which a 12-year-old boy jumps onto a Bluenose stamp and posts himself off to Australia by way of China. It's a fine movie, and there is even some bits and pieces about stamp collecting in there. But the truth is, travelling on stamps is not what it used to be! The mail just isn't delivered in quite the same way any more (in my youth, there were morning and afternoon deliveries as well as Saturday morning deliveries; in my grandfather's time there were up to four deliveries a day in the city.) Anyway, I do collect stamps and I do travel and there is something I guess that they both have in common.A sort of old-fashioned collector
I suppose I am an old-fashioned collector of sorts. These days I don't touch Mint stamps, although I learned to collect them from my old Gran when I was a lad. She was even then pointing out that "it's a bit expensive dear," and in those days there was no way near the quantity of stamps put out each year that there is now. So I gave up on the Mint and I must say I am much happier with the obliterated or cancelled kind. They are the ones with real life in 'em. Give me a nice, not-too-dark yet readable cancellation, one that is round for preference and has the town name on it, not one of these great square inky things that muck up the image and more besides, often as not! So in order to find a really good copy of each stamp, I sometimes have to go though a hundred copies (and sometimes more) until I get one that has come through as postally used but has not been otherwise abused, no rhyme intended! That's why I like kiloware, because it gives you dozens of copies of each stamp and makes hunting for even the most common issue quite exciting (if you like that sort of thing). I buy and sell on eBay and although I have tried other sites, nothing compares with this one. I have had no trouble really, in the two years in which I've been a member, although I have had a couple of distant buyers fail to respond to e-mails and so on, as happens periodically - you never really know why. You learn who the good traders are and there are plenty of them. I did get taken for a proverbial ride once, but it didn't involve eBay, so I am chary of dealing outside the site. I collect three countries mainly, or try to - it's hard to keep up. They are Australia, where I'm from, Canada, where I live and Great Britain where stamps and a good portion of both Canadians and Australians originally came from. And you know the saying probably: "So many stamps, so little time." Have fun while you can!
