I am a glass artist selling contemporary (boro) marbles that I make among other work such as pendants and small vases. I've been blowing glass for almost 11 years and have been on eBay for the last 3 or so years. All my work is guaranteed.

Thanks for visiting! My auctions usually end on Sundays, around 7 pm west coast time. I mainly sell marbles but do have other types of work available from time to time so be sure to check back! For those of you interested in a little about what I'm up to in glass and just in life in general, I USED TO have a Blog, but as you can see it doesn't exist anymore. Ebay discontinued the blog section without any announcement other then a sentence on the top of the blog page. I was fortunate enough to capture ~90% of the code before it was gone so I will start up another blog soon and post the archive... stay tuned. Please visit my website- the link is on my About Me page and you can subscribe to my newsletter to find out about new listings. Enjoy your day!

Marvelous Marble 2009 Calendar now available- I only have 17 left!! Click on the pics to see the listing and find out more!!!

Providing you with a stress free experience along with absolutely unique art work of exceptional quality is my goal.

What is gold and silver fuming?

Thank you for your interest in my work. My name is Kevin Nail, I'm 30 yrs. old, my company name is Stress Less Glass Art Co., and I now live in Bend, OR. I began working with glass in mid '97 in Seattle, WA. Originally I moved to Seattle to go to audio school, but I met a glass blower who was looking for an

apprentice so school took a back seat. Since I had an interest in blowing glass already- it took off rather quickly.

I became interested in glass early on back in highschool, where my best friend at the time had a co-worker that was just beginning to teach himself how to blow glass. We became friends with him and he gave us small scraps and a few clues on what to do.

We had our little Bernzomatic torches that we'd use, spending hours melting those wonderful scraps... for me it was in my bedroom in my parent's house all night long as they slept- I was 17 :) My mom just recently found out about this and finally understood what all those little burn marks all over the carpet in my room were from and we shared a laugh about it.

I'm a musician by nature- glass is actually pretty secondary to my love of making music. I'm working toward getting my music back to the forefront of my life through my glass career- so keep your "ears open"!! I play fret-less bass guitar, drums, piano, and make electronic music as well as hip hop beats with scratching

and other samples I compose.

My other interests would be getting outdoors- I LOVE hiking and I LOVE snowboarding... I wish I could do more!! That along with astronomy- it's all the same really, appreciating nature and it's wonder and beauty.

I've always been a big fan of physics- I was an underachiever in school, because it was boring, but in physics and math I did very well. To me, blowing glass epitomizes a physics project of some sort every time I melt it. Three spacial dimensions- one time dimension, thermodynamics, and the force of gravity constantly present... to be able to manipulate it all at once- I find it to be quite a rush in the intellectual realm!

I pride myself on being different and make an extra effort to stand out. I want to be known for making work you don't see anywhere else.

I feel it's my place in this world to make a mark of excellence by standing out from the others and by doing what I do best; making unique art with an absolute attention to detail and originality.

Again I thank you for the interest and wish you a great day!

peace, Kevin

Below I have a few of my signature series marbles with some pictures and information. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

    Fumed Sunflower

This marble is colored only by pure gold and silver fume. It has a spiraling dome with pedals extending above and out from it with the spiral lines reaching up over each pedal. Usually is around 1 1/2" in diameter.

And- the really cool thing about these marbles...

Click thumbnails for full size image.

In the above pictures, I'm holding the marble with my index finger and thumb so that my grip is allowing sunlight to pass through the marble. Since the fuming inside of the marble is translucent, then sunlight passes through and projects the interior onto a surface below. It's actually projected in the entire picture, but you can only see where a shadow is because the sunlight easily overwhelms the projection.

Here is a short video of me holding a Fumed Sunflower in direct sunlight; you can see it in front of a white background, a black background, and the projection of the interior onto the paper... amazing to see!

    Blue Sky Tornado

This seems to have no beginning and no ending to the twisting going on inside. It has a rainbow striped dichroic cane encased with silver fume on the back side, then twisted one direction, then I change the axis of the marble and twist again. The fume is always very reflective and adds a perfect compliment to the cane. Usually is around 7/8" in diameter.

    Fumed Dichro Helix

This marble has two rainbow striped dichroic canes twisting around eachother deep inside the core. Hovering above them is a this encasement of a mix between gold and silver fume. This marble actually starts out as a hollow tube- I fume the inside of the tube with gold and silver then lay in the dichroic cane. I then very carefully collapse the tube from one end to the other until there is no air left and what you see is what results. Usually is around 1 3/8" in diameter.

    Fumed Latticino Twist

Here is another of my exclusively gold and silver fumed marbles. It has gold and silver fumed latticino canes encased deep inside the core underneath a light coating of silver fume, twisting around one another ever so gently. You won't find this level of control of detailed fume anywhere else- this is a Nail special. Usually is around 1 1/2" in diameter.

    Box Marbles

All these marbles have some sort of color stripes or dichroic canes wrapping around a clear core then encased with clear in such a way that it is shaped into a box. See several different styles below:

    Rainbow Box

This has a rainbow striped cane of various colors wrapped forming the box.

    Inside the Box

This is one of my "Inside the Box" marbles- this happens to be one of my Blue box marbles except one end of the box is open and you can see inside there is a sparkling opal- check the video below!

    High Contrast

This is one of my "High Contrast" marbles. There is one large white stripe and one large black stripe separated by a rainbow striped cane that is "bent" in a way so that from one pole of the marble you only see the red/ orange/ yellow while from the other pole you see the blues/ purples- very cool illusion effect in hand!

What is gold and silver fuming?

One of the aspects of lampworking that I find amazing is called gold and silver "fuming". Very few artists out there have a good understanding of fuming, and even less in the general public.

It's applied to the glass by taking small snips (separately) of pure gold and silver and putting them into the flame of my torch. With each metal, it starts to vaporize and I hold the glass I want to color in the path of the vapor and it then deposits onto the glass which I then can encase and manipulate.

For those who aren't aware, gold and silver fuming has what are called "transmitting" colors and "reflecting" colors. Simply put, "transmitting" colors are the colors you see when light has passed through the fuming before reaching your eye and "reflecting colors" are the colors seen when only light reflects off of the fume- none passes through. Gold gives a light pink appearance and silver a yellow with respect to the transmitting colors but when light is reflected upon the metals the entire rainbow is possible depending on the amount of fuming and how it is affected in the atmosphere of the flame.

I always include pictures with both white and black backgrounds to help demonstrate this unique feature so that you can see "now it's here, now it's not" aspect. These first two pictures here are of one of my Fumed Latticino Twist marbles.

Here is close up of another Fumed Latticino Twist- notice all the colors when a black background is present.
