My name is Suzanne Urban owner of Smirking Goddess Studio.I live in a seaside beach community in Connecticut with my powerseller husband Mike and our two house rabbits, Puma and Nibbleface.
Before I ventured into sculpting and illustrative paintings I was a commercial artist and graphic designer in the greeting card and publishing field. However along the way, I grew weary of creating art that was dictated by a mass-market mentality-"Harry Potter and Snowmen are hot this season Suzanne, draw us something like that." Need I say more?
It finally dawned on me I COULD BE the art director for a change-after all everyone else seemed to think they were one. This fortunate epiphany allows me to A) work from my heart and soul B) keep my standards of quality consistent and C) keep my aesthetic integrity intact, plus explore new mediums Perhaps this conjures a visual of me waving to my subjects with an imperious smirk? But the sentiment is real.
A silver lining did manifest from my freelance days, a discovered fascination with character development possibly due to my intrigue with all beings great and small, even if some of them annoy the heck out of me. But drawing characters all over my sketchbook made me itch to push them forward into sculpted fiber form and miniature illustrative paintings-a.k.a.ACEO's.
Thus I entered into the world of OOAK sculpture or specifically mixed media-fiber art dolls, art teddy bears, art ornaments and collage enhanced ACEO's and Small Format paintings. All of my art is conceptualized and designed by that grand poohbah of all Art Director's, MOI. My work's been in Teddy Bear Review and Contemporary Doll Collector Magazine and in the Toys Designed By Artists show. A lot of my work gravitates towards American holidays-possibly because I love the rich if not mysterious history of festive rituals and how they bond us all together in some good way.
I am a proud member of EHAG-the original juried Halloween artist's group on ebay and now PFATT! I am also founder of aHa American Holiday Artists or-American Holiday Artists, founded in 2006 and implemented January 2007 on eBay. AHA is a juried Holiday artist's group representing talent that sells OOAK and limited edition holiday and seasonal themed-art on ebay celebrating all holidays, in all styles and mediums and more. . .all year round. And I am a new member of ADSG!
