About the Swirling Brain!

Hi! My name is Jim Gary Brown, I'm the Swirling Brain! I'm 43 years old have a wife and two kids and I live in Garland, Texas. Here's my Swirling Brain Website.

How did I get the name "The Swirling Brain?" Well, you know when you watch a movie and it's really cool and you think about it for days afterwards? I've been calling that a "swirling brain moment!" So sort of like when you recognize a cool movie twist moment or something that makes you say, "cool" or "that's slick" or "awesome!" Or perhaps it's one of those eureka moments that inspires you to create something or invent something. That's pretty much where it comes from. I still rate movies by how long they leave my brain swirling after I watch them. Some movies like my favorite, "The Forbidden Planet," leave my brain swirling long afterwards!

Well, a friend of mine, Eric Yundt and I were talking one day. (BTW, Eric's brother John bought one of the first RBSs I've ever sold!) Eric owns a web hosting company now called TMatrix. Unbeknownst to me he had just gotten his web hosting company going and we were talking about swirling brain moment coolness everywhere in movies and robotics and such. Well, out of the blue he asks me if I were to ever have a website, what would I want for the domain name. Well, since we were just talking about swirling brain moments, I blurted out "swirlingbrain.com." My birthday was coming up soon and on my birthday, he informed me that he registered the domain name swirlingbrain.com and is giving me free web hosting (like friends fly free!) Very cool! It was the best present I got that year I believe! Although I don't get to see Eric as much as I used to, he still hosts my swirling brain website to this day and we still get together now and then!

So, "The Swirling Brain" has kind of stuck for many years and I use it for many of my userids. It seems kind of unique, so if you see "swirlingbrain" somewhere, it's probably me.

When I started to make Rolling Ball Sculptures, many times I would stand back and stare at them for a long time. They really make my brain swirl. I needed a company name, and really The Swirling Brain just really fit! So, there you have it. That's why I'm called the swirling brain... Because my brain swirls! Hopefully, my RBSs make your brain swirl too! :-) So, one day the swirlingbrain.com website went down and so I switched to www.rollingballsculptures.net since I felt that was more in line with I'm doing mostly. So now I have a better website url.

RBSs of course! I've been making Rolling Ball Sculptures since before I was in elementary! (over 35 years?) I've tried many different mediums from construction paper, to wood, to copper, to acrylic and even glass! I really enjoy making them. I've made many hundreds of them!
Robots.net
I write blog entries about robotic stories on Robots.net. Check out the RoboMenu widget I built which gives you RSS News feeds and Robot of the day on Robots.net.
I'm a Software Engineer!
I work for Intrusion Inc. as a Network Security Engineer, Software Engineer, and whatever else they need me to do. :-)
Electronics and Robot Stuff!
Ok, I used to make a lot of robots and was even a past president of the Dallas Personal Robotics Group (DPRG). My electronics and robotics history explains why some of my RBSs have electronics and robotics stuff on them!

I go to FBCG! I accepted Jesus as my Savior when I was about 18.

Wood Carving

I do some wood carving now and then. I've made a baby bassenett, some rose curtain rod ends and rose curtain rod holders, also made another set of rose curtain holders for my mom, A rose fence handle, A house number marker, tall rose trimmed shelves and small rose trimmed shelves, Gentlemen and Ladies restroom signs with a lighthouse and ship for the men and roses for the ladies. I've made other things too like a christmas ornament and fish and such. I can't remember all that I've carved.
