A little bit about Made in the Shade:
Made in the Shade is the marriage of my artsy-fartsy side which has always wanted and needed to create things of beauty and my desire to make a difference in the lives of our youth.
So, how does art help? A portion of every sale goes to help homeless and runaway youth in the Albuquerque New Mexico area. Every purchase you make will make a difference. One of the main agencies I work with is A New Day (a local teen shelter). 2005 was my first year in business and even though I didn't make a lot, I was able to buy new bed and bath linens, and winter gloves for the youth at A New Day.
I also teach jewelry making to the teens who are currently in residence. This was a total bonus. I knew that at some point in time I wanted to teach jewelry make to young adults. Arts in the Making was recruiting artists to teach for 2 hours one Sunday in May to the kids at A New Day. Sign me up! That sounds fun. And it was a blast! Nancy Hines from Arts in the Making coordinated the event and she sums up the experience in her short note. You can read it here.
The Artsy-Fartsy fun side of Made in the Shade......It began about 10 years ago as a fun and innocent trip to Portland Oregon for a visit with my best. While playing tourist and mad souvenir shopper, she drags me into a bead store...oops, never should have went in there. Who knew? All the colors, shapes and textures. I bought just enough beads that day for her teenage daughter to string me an ankle bracelet. I began collecting beads from everywhere I went...bead stores....yard sales....grandma's craft closet.
From that simple anklet 10 years ago to now...I'm stringing beads into works of art, starting my own business, turning my son's old room into a studio and even making my own glass beads! Wow! Life is truly a fun ride!
Thanks for checking me out, tell your family and friends.
